Rousimar Palhares’ former coach Murilo Bustamante, head of the Brazilian Top Team, says he is not surprised about Palhares’ latest controversial incident in the UFC Octagon, nor that he has now been cut by the organization and banned for life.

Speaking to Fighters Only, the esteemed trainer and former UFC champion said that Palhares’ tendency to hurt his training partners was a large factor in their parting ways last year. Palhares is now with Team Nogueira in Rio de Janeiro.

“I wouldn’t normally say anything because usually what happens inside Brazilian Top Team stays inside Brazilian Top Team. But Rousimar has been talking a lot of bulls--t about my team so I feel I am free to say what I think as well,” Bustamante tells us.

“I can say this - nobody ever defended him as much as I did every time he made a mistake like this. In the beginning I thought it was because he was naive or had too much nervous energy during the fights.

“But then he caused a lot of incidents inside my academy during his camps and I changed my mind.

“I got tired of seeing how he hurts people so often when he is sparring, especially when he has a fight coming up. We used to argue every time it happened, so we argued a lot.

“That was a reason - together with his nonsense excuses every time he lost a fight - that our relationship started to get bitter.

“I actually hired a psychologist to help me with him but, as we have seen, it didn't work.”

I was almost buying into the idiot-savant-like BJJ leg-lock specialist schtick.

"He's just a simple man, he doesn't understand, he loves Jesus, he gets too excited, forgets where he is, gets too focused, adrenalin....."

If that were actually true, I'd feel a bit sorry for him.  Rainman does BJJ.  Of Mice And Men.  Etc....  Still has no place in the UFC, but he'd have my sympathy if his IQ really was hovering around 70.

However with this latest bit of input (Voted UP OP) from Bustamante, I really think Palhares ego and love of his own "bad-ass leg-wrecker" reputation is what drives him to continuously hurt folks with his skills.

Cool of bustamante to try and help Paul Harris inside and potentially outside of the cage with the psychologist. Phone Post 3.0

I don't think I've heard anyone from his camp, team, management or whatever defend him in this situation. Almost like they knew it would happen again. Phone Post 3.0

Even his current manager are not defending him much. I was ok with a punishment, but NOT with a "never in the UFC again", but now, with this additional bit from Bustamante, I could care less. Well a little bit, cause I really enjoy watching him fight. But he deserves what's coming his way.

So its more about malicious intent. Heel hooks are fucked and dangerous. Scary when you are caught in one. Phone Post

Glad to see someone as respectable as Murilo being honest about pawl hairless. If he's got those tendencies in sparring let alone a match he absolutely deserves to never step foot in another match again imo
I would love to see him roll with " the talent" and get starched again. Phone Post 3.0

Bellator Fan - Guys that are good at leg locks tend to hurt others in the gym because those moves naturally hurt people. Palhares is a powerful guy so his pressure must be horrible. Phone Post 3.0

Quite the opposite: guys who are really good at leg locks understand the moves and tend to spaz/crank/panic less applying them than less experienced grapplers.

Example: If my instructor grabs hold of my foot, I'll test his lock to see if he's got it. If a blue or white get anywhere near my feet with a twisting lock, I'm tapping IMMEDIATELY.

If what you mean is that leg-lock are intrinsically dangerous, therefore people who go for them tend to injure their opponents more than people who don't, then you may have an argument.

For all those people comparing this to hendo/Bisping, and BJ/pulver, and Rampage/wand, or whatever he'll else example that doesn't even compare tompaul Harris.

It's ok dudes, we're still waiting on confirmation from hendos, Bj's, and rampages teams on how hendo would violently KO sparring partners all the time , then hit them with a disrespectful flying hammer fist. And I'm sure BJ pens camp would tell you he held on to chokes way to long on his training partners, and I'm just waiting on a reply from wolfslair on rampages ridiculous training antics.

There is still hope for you guys, don't give up.

I can understand Bustamante's feelings on this.

And I've been defending Palhares in his fight w Pierce.

Still, not cool to kick him when he's down.

Especially when it is based on creonte anger.

Like I said in other threads, he's a grown man, and he needs to take his medicine. Glad he lost his bonus, glad he got kicked out of the UFC. It's on him, straight up. Fuck that guy. Phone Post

I read a while back that he learned leg locks at white belt. Including heel hooks. And always cranked them. It was in an article which bugged him up. Mentioned he used them on his poor training partners. It was written in a almost joking fashion. Why has it taken till now for Bustamante to something. Also during the last Adcc Dan Schon tapped as soon as the position was set. No pressure applied. He released immediately. Phone Post 3.0

Thanks for the Vote UP.

Yeah, neither do I. I don't buy that he's too dumb to understand when to let go. He's an experienced grappler, who's considered one of the best in the world at leg locks. His grappling IQ must be high. It is a conscious decision to not let go.It doesn't matter whether its BJJ tournaments, practice, inside the cage, people get him around him.

A huge liability.

Great thread. I was sort of on the fence about how much punishment Palhares deserved for this latest incident. Hearing from MB, his mentor and former coach, that he pulled this crap in training quite often is very telling. Dean Lister also seemed to confirm this in another thread. Palhares got what he deserved, I now believe. Phone Post

The only thing I can think of is this: "Palhares has long maintained that his MMA mentor, Murilo Bustamante, instilled in him a need to hold on to submissions until there is no doubt as to the victor, an attitude the former UFC middleweight champion developed after he was essentially forced to submit Matt Lindland twice at UFC 37."

Bellator Fan - I think a lot of fans are scared to see a guy that's built like a cinder block attacking leg locks in the cage. Phone Post 3.0
It's less too do with his build and more to do with mental state. Phone Post 3.0
