lol that Renzoku set used to be in ALL of the martial arts video ads back in the day. They looked like hokey bullshit even back then, with the instructor adorned in full on mullet.

And I want to say when it came to the Margarida set the person who actually decided the moveset to film was Rigan Machado. Mind you, I am going from memory when BJJTapes used to post on the forum, so that is why we didn't see his signature stuff. I think BJJTapes pretty much stopped after getting in some sort of dispute with Gracie Barra guys as if you remember he was the one putting out the Champions of GB series as well as pan am and Mundial vids (hell if you didn't the 2003 Mundials when they came out good luck getting it now, and yes I have a copy lol).

BJJWRESTLER - About the Fabio Gurgel set....I had a Brazilian Blackbelt tell me how bad it was. He said, " I saw Fabio's set, I know Fabio, good man, but....he leave out many details on those techniques. Did he leave out on purpose or forget ? ". He smiled at the end, and gave me the impression that Fabio DID leave details out, because he didn't want to give out too much.

Yup. I can see that being the case at that time. Great ideas presented, it just requires a foundational appreciation for keeping everything tight and angled correctly - like: "Here's a great move; you figure out the integral parts that were glossed over which help make it work"

Tony Cecchine's material was pretty bad. He did have a sparring partner named Bruce Lee that made it comical.

truehonor, I believe so. Said Blackbelt showed me some things missing from the DVD's, which made a significant difference.

JasonGV - This thread made me smile. I remember an awful SBG video on side control, pitched as some masterclass 5 DVD set. This was when Matt Thornton was making really strong videos, and SBG was really coming across as an inclusive, no-sense organisation putting quality information for everyone.

I can't remember who taught it, but they did almost everything wrong. Including not just renaming techniques to teach them as new, but invent entire new concepts. Like... "po-mission"; a submission where you don't have to give up the pin to get! And then they showed a figure 4 from side control. LOL

Good times.

Tom Oberhue I believe. :)

If you can name one single better DVD on pre-1986 Jazzercise-influenced Feline Street Combatives I will gladly refund your money.

--Oh, what's that? There isn't one?

Yeah, that's what I thought!

I also remember the Renzoku Jiu-jitsu ads. I remember thinking what a joke the guys selling it were considering the set was released shortly after Renzo Gracie hit the scene with his win at the World Combat Championship. In addition, these guys happened to be based on the East Coast (just like Renzo). I liked their not-so-subtle way of riding off of Renzo's fame to sell their crap.

Snapple - Had such high hopes for the Earth Bound DVD based on the preview clips.

I only got a couple good takedowns from it. (The single leg & Ippon seoi nage) which were GOLD! The rest was bleh! Phone Post

JasonGV - Oh wait, I got another one. Remember when Margarida was killing everyone in the early/mid 2000s? BJJ Tapes announced his upcoming series and everyone was VERY excited. His cross knee pass, cross choke, baseball slide choke, all killer stuff everyone was looking forward to seeing.

And he didnt show ANYTHING he used in tournaments. He did a BJJ 101 set aimed at white belts which was terribly taught to boot.

Imagine Marcelo coming out with a series right after tooling everyone with his x-guard back in the day... and showing only closed guard moves. Fun times.
Perhaps, but I bet you are now better against tight jeans. Phone Post 3.0

Lol, I remember that set. Every move the fat Asian guy was yelling in pain.

Cecchine: "ok, most people do the kimura this way. But this is the proper way to do it!" *applies brutal kimura

Fat asian guy: "ahhhhhhh!"

He tortured that poor man.

What about Hatmaker's?

For comic relief - have you seen the Mario Sperry gay porn-like video where he's in a speedo and talking all kinds of shit? I love that one.

I asked about the kimura trap video and got 15 or 20 replies on here slamming it.

My favorites are
Gracie Combatives
Saulo Ribieros
Demian Maia's
and even though he blocked me on Twitter Eddie Bravo's are good and entertaining. Phone Post 3.0

I used to drill my knee on the stomach on a basketball after I read some Machado Brother trained it that way. I almost broke my knee.

I watched Kimo Leopoldo Panthers series.... not the best either. Panther got a lot of instructional videos at the beginning but not the best content.

You mean every single Mario video ever? Even with the Gi series, he's wearing a speedo...

Ever see Hugo Duarte's old VHS Instructionals...?

Very Bad.

"In this technique here you can see Hugo grabs arm and makes submission. Now, next technique..."

--Wow, thanks for the secret details!
