I find it hard to believe not a single person close to Clay Collard has told him, "Hey, Clay... MAYBE "Cassius" isn't the best nickname for a caucasian rookie fighter."

Is it really so hard to believe that there are people that also wish to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee? Phone Post 3.0

Kinda silly cause Cassius is a proper first name. Might as well use "Bob" as your fighting name.

Exactly. You can be a fan of a guy that isn't the same race as you.

Makes me wonder why it wasn't

Brown Sugar Ray Robinson or
Brown Sugar Ray Leonard.

White's should stick to whites and the black's with black. Amirite?

Or maybe...just maybe, white fighters can be fans of black fighters and even *GASP* use their names as a tribute and something to aspire to. Phone Post 3.0

I think it's weird seeing cassius clay t shirts or anything like that. Muhammad hated having that name, which is why he changed it. Phone Post 3.0

Technically he hated the name "Clay" since that was the slave owners name and forced upon his ancestors. Cassius was given to him by his parents, and therefore didn't have the same negative connotations. Phone Post 3.0

I always thought he changed it due him embracing the beliefs of the Nation of Islam. It was done to rid himself of his given slave name.

The kid is no chump, but by no means a prodigy. ANYONE using that name should be a virtuoso. It has nothing to do with him being a fan, every fighter should be. However, a certain amount of respect should be given to what he did to inspire and advance the black athlete, same atmosphere with Hank Arron and Jackie Robinson. Plenty of ways to honor him besides not living up to the name his mother gave him.

No problem with it, personally.

I've more of a problem with the volume of really lame nicknames around. Phone Post 3.0

I'm not offended by it, but I do wonder why a fighter would want a nickname that references another fighter.
