Victor Arthur Miller
He had a very serious birth defect called Anencephaly. It's a neural tube defect simliar to Spina Bifada. There is no procedure that can be done to correct or reverse it, there is no cure. All we could do is try to make things as comfortable for him as we could. Most babies with anencephaly are stillborn, if they make it to term. Victor was stillborn.
We had to have labor induced because Victor was almost a month late. He was originally due on July 4th, but decided he liked where he was until we induced on July 23rd.
We were aware of our baby's condition from the first ultrasound, and had to bear the weight of our decision to not terminate the pregnancy throughout. It's not something I would wish on anyone, and there are definitely a few mofos out there who I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire.
That whole "reason for everything" is a fucking crock of shit. There is no fucking reason. The world is a fucking cruel place. But people need to find SOMETHING to console themselves....
It's been 3 years. Not a day goes by that I don't think about him.
The Duke Center for Human Genetics is currently conducting a genetic study to determine the causes of anencephaly and other neural tube defects.
