Pope says Atheists can still make it to Heaven

In comments likely to enhance his progressive reputation, Pope Francis has written a long, open letter to the founder of La Repubblica newspaper, Eugenio Scalfari, stating that non-believers would be forgiven by God if they followed their consciences.

Responding to a list of questions published in the paper by Mr Scalfari, who is not a Roman Catholic, Francis wrote: “You ask me if the God of the Christians forgives those who don’t believe and who don’t seek the faith. I start by saying – and this is the fundamental thing – that God’s mercy has no limits if you go to him with a sincere and contrite heart. The issue for those who do not believe in God is to obey their conscience.

“Sin, even for those who have no faith, exists when people disobey their conscience.”

Robert Mickens, the Vatican correspondent for the Catholic journal The Tablet, said the pontiff’s comments were further evidence of his attempts to shake off the Catholic Church’s fusty image, reinforced by his extremely conservative predecessor Benedict XVI. “Francis is a still a conservative,” said Mr Mickens. “But what this is all about is him seeking to have a more meaningful dialogue with the world.”

In a welcoming response to the letter, Mr Scalfari said the Pope’s comments were “further evidence of his ability and desire to overcome barriers in dialogue with all”.

In July, Francis signalled a more progressive attitude on sexuality, asking: “If someone is gay and is looking for the Lord, who am I to judge him?”

Again, while a lot could be said about post Vatican II declarations being intentionally vague, there is nothing new in this teaching.  It goes back to St. Paul talking about the heathens having the law written on their hearts.  In reality, it is not a declaration that favors atheists since, like most people, atheists also sin against their consciences.  The flipside of the declaration is that atheists are held accountable for what they did know and will be without excuse on Judgment Day.   This pope is routinely misquoted (most popes are) and the media only emphasizes the things that fit their own religion of secular progressive liberalism.  Basically it is a form of religious arrogance because it only lends creedence to the things they approve of.  They are desperate for a pope that will drop Catholicism and convert to their own religion, so they cling to anything that sounds like a sign of that happening.

It's not contrary to a holy God. The fact is you are a sinner and as such do not get to be in the home of a perfect God. The mercy is him dying in your place to get you in.

One of the many flaws in the Pope's position is that sociopaths do not feel guilt over their actions. Their consciences are clear.

Basically the media prays that some day a pope will stop being Catholic and so they jump on anything that sounds even remotely like a pope has done so.  Meanwhile, if you read the words of this pope in full he is simply teaching old fashioned Catholic doctrine.  He may be putting it in a different way, but in reality I haven't seen him say or write anything that deviates from his predecessors or is not already contained in the current edition of the Catechism.  He is different in that he is focusing more on the poor and appears to be serious about living out a papacy in Franciscan poverty.
