I have a long commute to work and I am thinking of buying a new cheap car that is super good on gas, I am talking below 14k. The two I am thinking about are the Honda Fit and the Toyota Yaris, any opinions on these cars? The Prius and other Hybrids are over 20k.

I think the Yaris is a better looking car (if that's possible)

the jazz/fit has long been the industry leader in this category, it does suffer from a harsh ride tho. the yaris is very nice, but perhaps a near new corolla might be another option?

I have a yaris for work. Its not that bad of a car. Ok its gut-less but I got the speedo to read 110mph the other day. Down hill, slipstreaming a truck, with a tail wind.

get a 2007 5spd Elantra. you can get one basic for way under $13k and it will still have pw, pm, pl, keyless, dual fr, dual side, dual side curtain f&r air bags, 4whl disc, abs and 100k wty. 100x the car a Fit or Yaris is, a lot bigger too and only rated 1mpg hiwy lower than the Fit, also at 140hp much much more balls

i know what youre driving at and a current body elantra would not be worth $0 in 7 years. Even a 2000/2001 old crappy body style auto w a/c 100k will bring 1500-2500

A 7 year old Honda would fetch several times that Price. My mechanic friend says he hates working on Hyndais and recomended against getting one.

a 2000 civic lx 4dr auto with 100k will bring about $5k. if it's clean Hyundai in general is probably one of the easiest auto setups to work on, very similar in many ways with Honda

i actually got a fit and really like it. 5spd m fit sport. The mileage is a little bit lower then advertised (i do have a lead foot). Overall the fit comes with all safety features standard, the car is pretty well equipped at base (they actually have no factory options) you have to see this car in person to really appreciate the look and space. Beatuiful car. The yaris felt "economy" in comparison, not that the fit feels like a lexus or antyhing but it just felt better put together. etc.

I am actually considering buying one but the dealer was like you can't negotiate the price any further below 15,000 something. Is it true?

The mileage is a little bit lower then advertised (i do have a lead foot). did you think you could just drive however you wanted and would get 37mpg? I am actually considering buying one but the dealer was like you can't negotiate the price any further below 15,000 something. Is it true? I can sell you a Fit for way under $15k

the fit base model manual is like 13,800 or so... the sport has alloy wheels, body kit, spoiler, aux music input and full alarm = essentially 2 grand more. core car is the same.

I'm going back and forth with toyota matrix, suzuki aerio sx, and dodge calibers. they're all equally shitty but good mpg and fairly cheap. I know jack shit about these cars though.

FRAT i know the crash test ratings arent the best with the matrix (essentially a corolla with a hatch the crash tests performed very good with the car's optional airbags but not good with the standard equip). The fit had some really good crash test ratings... look into the scion xb xd (i know both come with all the airbags standard and are pretty well equipped). I passed on the scions cause the xb had a shitty space-age floating console/shifter and felt cheap. XD wasnt available yet but it is essentially a 5 door yaris (same platform) Yaris felt cheap and had really bad crash test ratings. mazda 3 hatchback loved this car, good crash tests, reliability... almost perfect, except price almost 20 grand. nissan versa specs are similar to the honda fit, good amount of space, bigger engine, cheap. but the car is built in mexico and there have been some reliability issues with the mexico plant in question. btw it is rumored that the mazda 3 will be getting redesigned and the current mz3 will be turned into the ford focus (so it would the kickass mz3 but cheaper like the focus). overall i love my car, only problem is the lack of armrest (which sucks).

I don't really like the floating console/shifter but most in that class seem to be going that way. in the class that I'm looking, it seems that just about everything is fairly even as far as ratings(all are scored pretty low on performance but then again...they're not suppose to be sports cars). the xD does look quite a bit better than the xB. I know I don't like the dash in the xB. I'm not into that centered dash look at all. I'm wanting to get something like this to drive daily for a few years while in school and working. I "should" be able to get $4500 out of a truck that I have thats paid off so if I kept the cost of something used to under $15,000, I should be able to get something only a few years old and low miles. after its paid and I'm done with school, it'll be a winter vehicle/backup car. the main thing I want is fuel economy(going to be in college for a few years), roomy interior(has to be comfortable and be able to handle some bags in case of a road trip), and something that will handle well in the midwest winters. the only reason the suzuki is on the list is the mpg and awd but the awd isn't needed.
