Read it this last weekend. It is the usual 900 pages of goodness that we've come to expect from Erikson. He touches on tons of storylines in this one, jumping around pretty frequently. Primarily the book focuses on the Letherii Empire. My major gripe with the book is that one of the major storylines follows the fight between the Empire and the Awl tribe. It is done with Erikson's usual skill and the Awl leader is another interesting character but I would have preferred more Bonehunters, Icarium, Karsa, Tehol (best character ever), or any of the other characters that we already know and have followed. Book 7 of 10 is a little late to be introducing all new plots imo. Overall a very solid book. Had there been another 100 pages of action and moving the main plot along it would be one of my all time favorites. As it is, I give it a solid 8.5/10.

Probly the second... the Chain of Dogs arc is one of the best things I've read, out of any book.

I'd say Memories of Ice or Bonehunters for my favorite.

Fuck, Jon is ahead of me in a series.  And a series I got him started on at that.  How did this happen?  Heresy!

(goes off to paint tiger stripes on himself)

I loved the third book the best.  That fucker is awesome between Coltaine, Trake, etc...

These books are completely amazing, head and shoulders above just about anything else I've ever read. House of Chains is probably my favorite.

Just finished it. Erikson never ceases to amaze me, I'm amazed every time I read one of his novels (especially a new one). Just a master storyteller in every sense of the word.

I read Erikson's new one, Toll the Hounds, this weekend. I posted a review in the Geekground if anyone cares. Probably not :) Once again, ordered through Amazon UK, how dare they release it there first. Didn't we fight a war over that or something?

Hey Lymond, it might irk you to know this former convict colony island is getting it next month, which is before you guys too. :D

Thanks for writing a review, I'll read it when I have the chance. Still not sure if I'm going to buy it or wait to borrow from the library.

Yes, yes it does irk me that you also get the books before us ;) On the bright side, they were re-releasing all of his older books here in an effort to catch up so maybe I won't have to order the finale from the UK.

what series is this from? can someone give an order of the books so I might start from the beginning and not mess up and get the wrong book and jump halfway into the story.

The series is called "The Malazan Book of the Fallen", by steven erikson.

1. Gardens of the Moon

2. Deadhouse Gates

3. Memories of Ice

4. House of Chains

5. Midnight Tides

6. The Bonehunters

7. Reaper's Gale

8. (The newest, at least in the US) Toll the Hounds

Definately look into them if you think you might like them they are fantastic.

Just finished Deadhouse Gates last night, a year and a half after reading Gardens of the Moon.

Incredible series. You pretty much don't need to read any other D&D-type fantasy after this series. Will probably read Memories of Ice at the end of the year.

They need to release the series in TPB form like the Baroque Cycle TPB by Neal Stephenson (between HB/Mass PB size and with a loose spine that allows the book to lay flat without bending it).
