Guys, I have been a Federal Agent for over 20 years. I have done a shitload of undercover work and have had a good career. I just wanted the local guys who are thinking about going Federal to know that the grass is not always greener. In my area, the locals almost make as much as I do, and get a much better pension. The Fedreral Pension SUCKS!!! There is always the threat of being transferred to somewhere you don't want to be. I currently work for the Department of Homeland Security and I see Local guys jumping over and within a year or two, wanting to go back... Some are luckier than others. Anyway, I hope this helps someone in making a good decision for themselves. Peace, Larry

Larry are you under CRS or FERS for retirement?

I admit that FERS is somewhat lacking, but I am hedging on the fact that my TSP will be over a million dollars by the time I retire at 50. (I've been a FED since 1990  and contributing to TSP since 1995) I'm 35 now and I think being a FED has it's advantages.

I know I make much more than most of the locals. I make $103,000 as a GS-13 with very little overtime. I know Locals can make this much, but they usually work a lot more hours (OT, off-duty, etc.) to make it.

I do sometimes wish I was local though so I could be involved in a more broad based Law Enforcement carreer. I get trired of dealing with only Immigration issues. It would be nice to deal with DV's, assualts, traffic, etc. every now and then.

You're right though we have had a bunch of guys jump over and they usually say they are bored within a year or two.

KIDJUSTICE, I am under FERS. I started in 1987 as a U.S. Marshal. I just think that the 34 percent that we get after 20 sucks. I don't have that much in TSP as I thought I would have by now. We also get a SSN sup of about 800.00 per month. The local guys by me are making close to what I am making and have a better retirement. Our job is still a great job and we are both lucky to have it. Peace, Larry

All I can say is that I was tired of making half of the fed guys after 10 years as a local. I worked on a task force for years and finally made the jump. Some cities make good money, but nothing where I am at. Plus I really didn't want to get stuck in midnight patrol if someone got pissed off at me.

As a GS-12 W AUO and FLSA I make close to 100,000 with no overtime. Do locals have TSP with Agency matching funds?

shit I am only a 7 with a specialty pay. I am a fers/oo83 series. My pay is equivelent to a 9/10 but I obviously cant make the grade increase any where else and expect to make as much. My current position has a cap on it and I am about to make sergeant/lt. Which is an 8/9 but with specialty pay as well. Plus I also get locality pay too at about 25 - 26%. But I am making nowhere near what you guys are raking in at a 11/12/13. -Derek-
