I'm not sure if I would call myself a filmmaker as yet. I'v been involved with some big projects but only as far as driving round the casting director goes. I'm made some Super 8 animation at arschool and have done script development and directing in stills photography, but until I make a film, I cannot claim to be a filmmaker. I'll go look for yours.

Hey thanks LEMon. (Let me know how the fight goes tomorrow night at Luna Park.) I find film projects are pretty specifically about the people that you work with in a strange way. At the moment my biggest problem si that the people I look like working with again very soon are extremely scarey. but there doesn't seem to be any way around it. If I want to do the best that I can in my life I gotta hang out with the scary guys... Any suggestions?

I mean I think I've got to develop my conflict resolution skills in order to be able to successfully work with hardened crims who never want to go back to prison but bully me a bit every now and again because they spent so long in prison that their comportment values are sincerely fucked up but who are the best film talent I have ever encountered in my life! And so my question remains, any ideas on how to decline from awkward requests with minimum fall out? I'm thinking charming and whitty and have lots of funding so that they would never be short of a crust and would never have to make an unreasonable demand. And perhaps sign them to an agreement before comencing so that you can point to something that states what they already knew before setting out on said venture... Something that would neccessarily make any unreasonable request unthinkable, even in their opinion. Any more ideas? How do you get your way with seriously difficult people?

Idea One: - straight my friend who specialises in transactual analysis: Be clear. Underscore mutual professional obligations in an uninvolved, professional and pleasant voice. Then by directing the person's attention to professional matters that require decisions and infroamtion, he should be torn away from his previous mood and demands... Actually the last bit is mine. I won a Parker Pen for it at a Shearing Shed Management Course at the Brigalows.

Idea Two: Show him a picture of my "boyfriend." The first flaw with this idea is that in the particular crim culture that these guys come from the number one guy gets to be the "main actor" which is the one who is perceived to be with the female producer/writer/filmmaker so bucking this system is my aim. I've seen these total psychos become the most charming bastards and seduce the smartest women I've ever known. And I know what they did to each other before they came out! So it's the belief that the "main actor" is still real that I have to overcome. The challenge is to overcome the strength of the beliefs that this is how things should be. Like believing that they should be able to take my car on demand is flawed logic on their part. Flaw one is that I'm not sure if a photo will be effective. Flaw two with my plan is that I wouldn't relishing pretending to call my "boyfriend" in a tight situation... The aim here is to develop strategies for preventing tight situations altogether. So what happens is this: The mood of the said difficult guy changes as his attention turns to money and his lack of it. The problem arises when he castes his attention around to assess the tools at his disposal for creating instant monies. The last time I was incorporated into a plan I just split and haven't been back. My aim is to work out how I can go back and be safe in order to make acclaimed work. And I guess what the OG is all about is thinking outloud with 50 or so voices in my head who say some pretty damn useful things. If anyone here has had a situation where they successfully got out when they were being stood over please tell me your story here. I'd love to listen. Idea Three: I'm thinking of telling the more sensible but still unstable but more filmically successful, acclaimed-actor guy what my problem was with armed-hold-up-guy and hope that he explains the situation effectively so that work can commence. I guess the situation is coming down to, how removed can I be from my environment and where does integrity stop and compliance begin? These guys were really powerful and now they're not powerful any more. I can tell they still "work". hey have to glow of doing things well but making a film company and filming... Is doing nothing illegal enough? Would it be safer to simply "consult" rather then be an active part of running the thing? They want to call the film company: "Beg, Borrow and Steal" :D What do you think? Or perhaps the question is: how close could they come to participating in a legitimate business that does not function according to in-house rules? How do I ask them about what worries me? Do we do a workshop?

To summarize: I have found some very bad people with remarkable film talent whom I want to make film with. Some of them bully me, like for example, trying to take me car on demand to do awful things with, thus far they have been unsuccessful. And so my question is, any ideas on how to decline from awkward requests with minimum fall out? Setting the scene: They are ex-prisoners. In the particular crim culture that these guys come from the number one guy gets to be the "main actor" which is the one who is perceived to be with the female producer/writer/filmmaker so: Problem One: resisting the pressure of forming any kind of personal relationsihp with any of these guys. It's the belief that the "main actor" is still real that I have to overcome. How does one say an effective no to peopole who aren't used to tkaing a no and have gone to jil for refusing to accept nos in the past? Here is ann example of what happens: The mood of the said difficult guy changes as his attention turns to money and his lack of it. My problem arises when he castes his attention around to assess the tools at his disposal for creating instant monies. The last time I was incorporated into a plan I just split and haven't been back. In jail these guys were really powerful and now they're not powerful any more. I can tell they still "work". They have that glow of doing things well but what they really want to do is make a film company and make films. Which brings me to a whole other set of problems: Is doing nothing illegal enough? Would it be safer to simply "consult" rather then be an active part of running the thing? They want to call the film company: "Beg, Borrow and Steal" :D What do you think? Or perhaps the question is: how close could they come to participating in a legitimate business that does not function according to in-house rules? How do I ask them about what worries me? Do we do a workshop? How do I avoid being coerced into doing things that I will not do? I mean doing illegal stuff isn't my issue cause I just won't do that but arguing about it and enduring confrontation is something else. HELP ME PLEASE? Refining Question: How to negotiate with these guys or what do I do to avoid getting to the point where I'm laughing off stuff I don't want to hear? At the moment I'm thinking name it all at the beginning and leave no stone unturned, define the boundaries of my involvement. How would you feel if someone opened a meeting with a statement hey, you are scum and don't do that scum stuff to me ever? Now, down to what this character would have said next!

How do I get across the extent of my involvement and lay down boundaries effectively, before anything happens?

You know one thing I have noticed is that young criminals speak about their crimes in correct, legal jargon. For example, they refer to "the assault" like "She knows about the assult." So maybe I could declare that I think being involved in "the project" is awesome. "Here are the guidelines for my involvement. If you're ammenable to these limitations then I'm happy to give this project my best. In my home there will be no, consorting with fellow criminals or work, no drugs, or 'goods' and none of my property will be used for 'work.' That includes my phone and my car." How else would I say that? What have I left out?

hahaha sounds interesting! Are you doing a fictional work or documentary? I know what you mean btw with the jargon. Alot of kids who went to Juvenile det. etc are super smart and savvy, they just grew up in the the wrong area. Alot of them are supernice but i still keep my space slightly.

That kind that chews up a lot of your time in fascinating research and truly, expensive books that you will continue to show off after the thing is in the can and lots of interviews with descendants who will undoubtable never speak to you again after they see the film.
