This was just posted today on wral.com. Lawmakers have decided to legalize MMA in NC. RALEIGH, N.C. -- A popular form of organized fighting could soon enter the ring in North Carolina after lawmakers agreed Thursday to order state law enforcement officers to regulate mixed martial arts. The approved legislation, now headed to Gov. Mike Easley's desk for his signature, would also increase fees the state Alcohol Law Enforcement Division charges fighters, their managers, promoters and referees, to pay for the division's increased responsibilities. A $1.50 fee also would be added to each ticket to fighting events regulated by the state. In mixed martial arts, fighters use a combination of martial arts, boxing and wrestling to try to defeat an opponent in a ring, cage or combination of the two. A form of the sport known as "ultimate warrior" matches was banned in North Carolina in the 1990s after it was deemed too bloody and uncontrolled by critics. But supporters argue the sport has cleaned up its act and improved its safety, and it now draws millions of television viewers on cable and pay-per-view outlets. The legislation approved Thursday removes the "ultimate warrior" ban and legalizes mixed martial arts. It directs the Alcohol Law Enforcement Division and the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety to adopt permanent rules to regulate mixed martial arts as soon as possible. An earlier version of the bill would have increased the minimum liability insurance requirements for so-called "toughman" events, single-elimination tournaments of amateur boxers that often attract locals to spar at small-town venues. But that provision, which was designed to slowly eliminate the events, was removed in the Senate. Another bill on Easley's desk, passed last week, creates an advisory commission to make recommendations on regulating boxing and other forms of competitive fighting.

Well so far so good. Doug Muhle and myself have worked hard to get the law passed. It took some time but we did it. We are working to get a show off the ground in september. If you are interested in fighting drop me a line jason@crossfitnc.com This will be a historic event. Also in the next 2-3 weeks we will announce additional fights.

September is too early for me to fight (hell next July might be, as old and broken down as I am) but my knee is better and if I could fight in NC I think I'd like to foght a few more times. But I am going to have to have cooler weather to train, summer is pretty busy for me.

Will this be allowed in September?  It sounds like the ALE & DCC/PS will create some control regulations before it is allowed.  Any way to find out when the Governor actually signs off on this to make it legal?

Get ready for NC to blow up in kickboxing & BJJ!!!!!

once ratified he usually signs a bill within a week or two. Or so it would seem from the NC legislative web page. Control regs wont take any time at all. Setting up a commission, amatuer rules, and bullshit fees and rules WILL take some time.

Here is a similar story.... Published: Aug 02, 2007 Lawmakers OK type of martial arts matches Ryan Teague Beckwith, Staff Writer Mixed martial arts could be coming to North Carolina. The Senate unanimously passed a bill Wednesday that would allow mixed martial arts matches once the Alcohol Law Enforcement division of the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety comes up with regulations for them. The House passed the bill 93-20 Wednesday night. It now goes to the governor for his signature. The sport uses techniques from different traditions of martial arts, boxing and wrestling. Its godfather is Bruce Lee, who came up with a system called Jeet Kune Do in the 1960s. Sen. Katie Dorsett, a Greensboro Democrat, said the matches are "a new sport" popular in the military that "provides not only fun but fitness as well." One colleague said the bill made him nervous. "I'm kind of reluctant to even question this bill," joked Democratic Sen. William Purcell of Laurinburg, "having seen this guy at the Finance committee the other day who could probably take care of five or six of us at one time." Charles Falk, owner of the Innovative Martial Arts Academy in Wake Forest, said mixed martial arts matches are tough but do not lead to serious injury.

I am meeting with the boxing commission this week to work on the rules and the sanctioning of the events. Hopefully we can get the ALE to adopt the rules and then once the new boxing commission is set everything will be a go. I will keep everyone posted. We should be announcing more fights in the next week or 2. If you want to fight get up with me the cards will fill up fast.

Can't remember where I saw a notice about an event; but heard there was going to be something in Cherokee at the casino.  Evidently the date is soon and curious how they are doing this so fast.

Term1, can you give an update on the status of the regs... how is the process moving forward?  who is giving input? will the draft regs be published for comment?
