I've always wanted to get one. Now the wife's car has the "check engine" light is on and I'd rather figure it out myself. What's a good consumer one???

Mine's a Matco, about 200 bucks, works perfect.

I'm assuming you mean an OBDII for a late-model car.

They sell cheaper ones at the parts stores, but I've never used one.

The Matco works perfect, only 3 buttons and it prompts you for every step.  I've loaned it to non-mechanic friends, you don't even need a manual to run it.
