What's the word? I talked to a Notre Dame rep for a while the other day and that sounds like an almost ideal program for me, but i dunno about Indiana.

Are you planning on teaching? There are a zillion people with philosophy PHDs, you need to go to a really good school to do that. Do you want to do Continental philosophy? If so, I would look at geography programs that have a heavy critical theory base. Political science as well. Be careful about going into debt to get a Phd that will not get you a job later.

I do want to teach. ND's program is such that you pay no tuition and you make a stipend because you TA. They have the highest percentage of people who go on to tenure track positions as well.

That is a good deal, how much is the stipend? I am doing the exact same thing at a school that has a much worse track record at placing tenure track Phds.

Check out the political theory department at Northwestern. It is now stacked with some of the best political theorists out there (read philosophers).

Are you Catholic?  ND is great either way.  You need a strong history school.  Find someone who's writing you love and go work with them.  Also, get some money (the most important thing).  I think History of Phil jobs will be good in the future.

I'm not catholic. Money will be the only limiting factor.

Steppenwolf, check out Mary Dietz (Northwestern). She has done work on Machiavelli, Aristotle, and Ancient Political thought. She was a prodigy, earned several Phds at a young age. She is a great teacher and was my advisor. She also wrote a letter of recommendation for my current Phd studies.

Chicago would great if students had access to classes taught in the various big depts.  Can you take a seminar at Loyola if you attend NW'ern for instance?

I went to the University of Minnesota. Dietz, Druckman and Farr all left to join Northwestern. The program is really good and a good buy as well. I never had a class with Druckman. Northwestern's IR program is pretty strong, a good mix of constructivism, political economy and comparative politics(Very strong on Africa). A recent Phd dissertation was on civil and ethnic conflict in Africa.

It is still pretty good, but I would go to Madison or Northwestern first. Better living environment. Depends on your theoretical and/or area of interest.

I would go anywhere to say that I won something called the Heidegger scholarship.  My friend broke his leg trying to tip one of what he presumed were the ancestors of Heidegger's cows in Bavaria.

he waited in the hut for the ambulance.

I think you get a mandatory ass-raping for saying "Heidegger" at Rutgers.
