What are your opinions on this bike? What similar alternatives exist? Thanks. (Hello, big_slacker? Hello?)

It's a hell of a bike, but I just can't get over the styling.

yeah, it needs to decide what it wants to be. a cruiser or a sport bike.

No, it is what it is. The v-max has always been a power cruiser. If you want a cruiser that can whoop about anything in a stoplight race or most things in a quarter mile it is your bike. It is not a bike you're gonna take to the track or tour on. Personally I think that it compares with the new suzuki b-king. Personally I would buy a busa and ergo mod it. Then you've got ALL the power you coul dever ask for but also some long haul comfort, wind protection and sport touring ability.

Nothing to hate about 145hp and comfort.

I actually like the styling a lot. I like the Triumph Rocket III too.

Forgot about the rocket III, there is one in the parking garage at work. I'm really a sportbike guy so take my opinion FWIW, I just know *of* some of these since they jump out of the cruiser role a bit putting performance before style.

I really have no business riding anything bigger than a weed eater motor attached to my bicycle. But I sure do love the look of a power cruiser. Hey big_slacker (and everybody else), are there any bikes that have more of a traditional style (foot placement more under the hips, a little more upright torso rather than way back) than a cruiser but the same styling without the massive power and size? In other words, power cruiser looks but nicer on the wallet and the handling for us little guys (who are also novices). Thanks.

Yep, standards still exist, but the lines are blurred a bit. Some bikes have lower pegs and softer suspension but a detuned I4 sportbike motor. Some have handlebars and a harley style headlight but a 1000cc sport v-twin. Sometimes its hard to tell the diff between a naked sportbike and a standard. Call it what you will, but all of the below fall into one catagory or maybe both. Suzuki: SV650 (what I ride) and SV1000. Honda: 599 and 919 Yamaha: FZ6 and FZ1 Kawasaki: Z1000, versys You can do a quick run through the website of the big 4 japanese manufacturers and check those out. I can vouch for the sv650 naked version as a true standard. Its got handlbars, upright seating, a motor tuned for low end street duty grunt and fairly low pegs.

I'd love to own a Vmax, I've always dreamed of owning one because I like standards, I'd kill myself though.

Thanks big_slacker. All are really beautiful bikes. Too bad I can't have one of each.

Kind of quirky with the fake gas tank, its actually under the seat. I still want one.

I like this Valkyrie too. Still too much bike for me, but 1600 cc is a lot closer than 2300 cc.

I've lusted over the V-Max since I first saw it mentioned in Hot Rod Magazine in '83. I came REALLY close to buying one summer '06. The price was agreed on, I had the cash in hand, and I just had to go pick it up. Woke up and thought "WTF am I thinking?". Told the guy I just could not convince myself that it wasn't a dumb purchase for me. He told me no problem, and that it was the dumbest purchase he had ever made! Awesome machine, but probably NOT a good choice for a beginner....
