http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/11/nyregion/11cnd-stab.html?_r=2&hp=&oref=slogin&pagewanted=print&oref=slogin As the day wore on, it appeared that the homeless man was either a good Samaritan who had come to the aid of the struggling transit worker, Maurice Parks, or had inadvertently collided with the robbery attempt. ...... The muggers -- detectives believe it was three men in all -- pulled a knife and Mr. Parks pulled one, too, the police said. The conductor apparently carried the blade for just this reason, so he could defend himself, one law enforcement official said. But who stabbed whom first in this case is an open question. Mr. Parks had slash wounds on his hands, indicating that he was trying to defend himself, the police said. When the blades were wielded, the tally sheet was long: Mr. Parks, 39, of Manhattan, was stabbed in the abdomen; the homeless man, Florenza Byas, 28, was stabbed in the chest, back and leg; one of the mugging suspects, Hector Cruz, 21, of Manhattan, was stabbed twice in the abdomen, the police said. The official said that investigators believe Mr. Parks was stabbed by Mr. Cruz and that he -- in turn -- stabbed Mr. Cruz and Mr. Byas. "The homeless guy wandered into the middle of it, unbeknownst to the victim, Parks, and he thinks he is one of the perpetrators and he stabs him," said the official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing. .............. The three wounded men were taken by ambulance to Harlem Hospital Center, where Mr. Byas was pronounced dead at 12:46 a.m., the police said.

There is an artilce on this in todays.NY Post. http://www.nypost.com/seven/01132008/news/regionalnews/hero_kins_anguish_382939.htm It seems the person being attacked,Mr. Parks, is into MA and was doing what he felt he needed to do with his own knife. He might have seen the good samaritan as one of the attackers and stabbed him in the melee. A bad situation all around...
