i was just wondering if you guys have or know of a starter guide for guy's who want to learn how to grill/smoke food well. i have a crappy little weber grill at home that i just grill some steaks and chicken on, but i would like to buy a grill/smoker. i would also like to learn some basics about the two. any suggestions on the grill/smoker to buy? i see that the Char-Griller Smokin' Pro seems pretty good. what about a starter guide on grilling/smoking? or maybe even a forum/website that i could refer to. thanks in advance.

A Weber Smokey Mountain would probably better suit your needs. Very good temperature control and well built unit. You even see these at BBQ contests. Offset smokers like the Char-Griller are typically fuel hogs, although they do have a large capacity, they will require more attention to maintain temps.

thanks for the input. i've been reading a lot about the weber smokey mountain. i'm not ready to pull the trigger yet, it looks like about a $300 investment when all is said and done.

Big Green Eggs are amazing cookers but expensive. No big deal if you love to cook. But if you're on the fence a BGE might be pricey.

More versatile. It's an excellent grill as well as smoker. The WSM is only a smoker.

I might be wrong here, but if the the WSM is the like the ECB it can be easily used as a grill, although it's not all that convenient.

The WSM is about 5x's the quality of the Brinkman, you're right though, you could grill on it, the BGE is an exponentially better grill though.

Thinking about buying a low-end smoker that uses propane for fuel source. heres's the two I'm currently interested in. Great Outdoors Mountain Smoker - read good reviews... $100 at Walmart Master Built 7 in 1 - good review, plus can use as charcoal grill (something else I'd like to get)... about $142 w/shipping from Target. Anybody have experience/comments?

I got this for Christmas and I love it. Cheap, well built and I think that it holds heat well... Check the local stores they get them in all the time.

I may be biased here, but...

I never really did any smoking before. I just had a standard charcoal grill and threw meat on it etc. I finally plunked down the money for the BGE and I couldn't be happier. I started smoking different things. I learned how to do it through reading and trial and error. I've never grilled a better steak with a regular grill. You just can't get the hight temperatures you need for searing etc. The smoking has been great. I can't believe how juicy it remains.

I swear by the BGE but I am still a novice smoker/bbq'er

Tell me more about the BGE. If you bought that shit to cook a juicy steak, I'll slap you right through your computer screen.

And the Walmart GOSM works, but you'll probably want to add vents to it from what I've read. I have the same model but a non-Walmart version and it comes with some extra vents, higher gauge steel, and I believe a slightly different burner. I'm not saying it won't work, but you might want to look into it before going with the Walmart special... they were selling sub $300 HD DVD players just before Christmas.

It turns out that I mostly use it for grilling because smoking takes so long.

Totally not fair. I bought that fucker in order to smoke shit, and I have, however... I don't have all the time in the world to smoke shit for hours. So I cook a lot on the BGE using it as a grill. I apologize dammit.

*makes one hamburger on the BGE*
