They are touting the idea of playing the 2010 WC on artificial pitches in South Africa. Personally the idea sounds stupid. However have artificial pitches improved that much in recent years? Are they much different to play on than normal pitches and would they give some teams an advantage? Thanks.

I saw this....I think the pitches would have to be in pretty bad shape to justify it considering 99% of the players at the World Cup play their football on grass pitches.

Surely a country hosing the world cup (and all the cash that brings in) can afford to get some good groundsman in to make sure the pitches are of a high enough standard. Just doesn't make sense to me.

i think the issue is more of the huge investment needed to build and maintain high standard pitches (especially in the rainy or summer seasons). because after the world cup, what other major events will bring in enough revenue to sustain these pitches to the expected quality?

I think it's a good thing they got it. It's the global game and will do wonders for the African self esteem that they have the WC there.

Having said all that. It IS England's turn at the next available chance.

North American players are used to it because we have to play indoors during the winter. So far Beckham is the only one to have complained about artificial pitches in the MLS being too hard on the players and was ridiculed in the local press for it. That being said, of course I have a preference for natural grass.
