1) Depends on where you're coming from. Wilmington's cost of living is one of the highest for the state, but very comprable to other large cities in NC like the Charlotte area or Raleigh/Chapel Hill area. 2)Again depends on where you're coming from. Wilmington like most of NC is growing rapidly. Real estate is certainly way more expensive than in the rural areas of NC. There's no shortage of half million + dollar homes going up every day. That being said, you can find some great houses for a decent price. 3) Like hooah said, depends on your occupation. Wilmington is a hotspot for professionals. As much as the area is expanding, I'm sure you can find jobs in any field. 4) Check out Evolution. They are in Wrightsville right on the beach and just across from a great beach bar. Full facility. Don't know them personally, but my trainer is friends with the guy who runs it. they've got a no gi tourny next weekend.

I live in NYC metro area, so I doubt the COL is higher than here :)

My wife is a teacher and I work in non-profit.  I looked up Teacher salaries and they seem okay.

Thanks for the answers guys.  Please keep them coming!

Wilmington is a nice place to live and a growing city. If you are from NYC, then you will now actually be able to buy a bigger house for a lesser price in NC. School: You can check out John Maynard's Champion Karate. Joe Lewis works out at this school quite often (lives in Wilmington); they have a good grappling, Kickboxing, and MMA program. Maynard is a great guy - check him out. Welcome to NC!!!

JKD Joe Lewis?  Awesome!

I'm hoping to check out Wilmington soon.  I haven't made any concrete decisions yet, but it's on the shortlist of possible locations.

Highpoint is right...you'll be able to get much more home for the dollar coming from NYC. Cost of living will be lower too.

You are also most likely going to make alot less money as well. But I suppose that depends on your career/job.

On a side note Kneeblock..... I'd put Wilmington up against any place in guy to hot women ratio.

NCbjj is correct about the women. UNCW definately brings alot to the table. If you are married, or have an understanding wife, then you will love the amenities in Wilmington.
