I have a hard time believing that he was a member of this church for 20 years and didn't know what it was all about. I don't think Obama is a racist, but I do think it says something (poor judgement at the least) that his pastor/friend/mentor makes such statements and Obama doesn't immediately disassociate himself from the man immediately. If I knew someone that spoke that way about blacks, I would stop hanging around with him.

don't think he's racist, i just don't understand why he was part of that type of church in the first place. You can't denounce something you've been part of for 20 years and expect people (especially white people) to accept that. It doesn't add up.

I'd like to think not, and tend to think he isn't.

When you say something is a big part of your life and it turns out to be racist, you really have to look at the company one is holding.

I mean, if someone went to hung out with Klansmen for 20 years and said they were a big part of their lives and wouldn't "disown" them because of what they said/did, I'd think they are racist. So I have to apply similar logic to Obama.

Do I think he's racist- probably not. But judging by the company he's keeping, I'd have to say he's at least somewhat tolerant of it.

You can't denounce something you've been part of for 20 years and expect people (especially white people) to accept that. It doesn't add up.

Why add the "especially white people"? I don't think blacks or mexicans would be any different.

So I have to apply similar logic to Obama. -you can't compare the pastor to a klansman. wright was alive when it was actually LEGAL in this country to discriminate against black people. you don't think that part of his "rage" has anything whatsoever to do with the fact that he actually experienced institutionalized racism? i'm sorry, but going by this logic, you'd have to ask most black people to disown most of their family members over the age of 65.

The Left in the US is amazing. They will forgive almost anything to maintain power. He's a racist, but he's our racist. Is basically their mantra. Heck, at least they are fair about it. Robert Byrd was in the KKK for how long? 20 years in a racist black church is nothing.

Your pastor is not merely your friend, or shouldn't be. That person is a spiritual guide. I would not have a spiritual guide or mentor who was an abhorrent racist, no matter what their reasons for their "rage".

I'm 100% convinced that Obama could say "i hate all white people, and if i'm elected I'll pass a law banishing all whites from the country" and at least half of you would still defend him between Ron Paul and Obama you can't throw a rock at a political rally in this country without hitting someone who is dangerously out of touch with reality

So, Brenda. Is it reasonable and productive discourse to accuse whites of engineering HIV to kill blacks? The more I hear black people defend the shit that this man talks, the less I want to hear from black people. And I don't consider myself racist. If this is the effect you're going for, so be it.

Or about Catholics?

-you can't compare the pastor to a klansman

Then change "Klansman" to "church that preaches separatism or racism". Is that better for you?

i'm sorry, but going by this logic, you'd have to ask me to disown most of my family over the age of 65.

Going by that logic, anyone over the age of 65 should be able to do/say whatever the fuck they want, right? Because it was legal at some point.

"Or about Catholics?" OK, Frasier. Which adviser and what did he say? Be specific.

brendasu, i don't quite understand your stance on this. I don't think the majority think he's racist, they just don't understand why you'd stick with a church that was racist, at least that's how i see it. If i was part of a church or a family and it went against my core moral judgment, i would get out of that family/church ASAP. i wouldn't stick around for TWENTY years and name him my mentor. It just doesn't make ANY sense.

"wright was alive when it was actually LEGAL in this country to discriminate against black people." And now it's not. "i'm sorry, but going by this logic, you'd have to ask most black people to disown most of their family members over the age of 65." Therefore, it is perfectly peachy to preach racial hatred. QED. Weak. Very weak.

And now it's not. and just like that -- all of his experiences have just vanished? Therefore, it is perfectly peachy to preach racial hatred. QED. -he has the right to preach whatever he wants, really. are we arguing that he shouldn't be allowed to make sermons or that obama is racist because of those sermons?

"i don't give a shit what religion he, or any candidate is. i think there should be a wall between religion and the governing of this country. i think that most of your pastors and religous speech is total bullshit and nonsense. i don't apply any stricter standard to obama's guy." Then you should be upset with Obama *since he brought policy proposals to Wright to be "morally vetted"*!

Gotta also love the attempt to bring Bush into this. When all else fails- blame Dubya! ............................................ just pointing out that guilt by association is being applied pretty selectively in this issue. i didn't blame bush for anything...on this thread. and the fact of the matter is that if bush had improved race relations, then obama's guy wouldn't have anything to yell about.
