I am thinking of buying a home defense shotgun, and these are the two models I have narrowed it down to, any opinions on which I should buy for home defense?

Both have plenty of aftermarket options - go with the brand or price you are most comfortable with. I have an 870, they put them on sale pretty cheap around where I live 2-3 times a year.

I prefer the mossberg as I like the safety location. The 590 is a lot heavier, more steel in the receiver and has a thicker barrel. Both have a lot of aftermarket toys for them. It's hard to go wrong with either.

Are they making 590s anywhere? I thought they discontinued them?

The 590's are still being sold, they still are being used by the military I believe.

Skpotamus, any idea where would be a good place to get one? I googled and virtually every site was "out of stock". It doesn't look like Mossberg is selling thme or advertising them on their website. Thanks.
