Plouffe: McCain has the racist vote anyway

David Plouffe tells Linda Douglass that real racists are probably voting Republican in any case:

"[T]he vast, vast majority of voters who would not vote for Barack Obama in November based on race are probably firmly in John McCain's camp already," he says.

Plouffe also made a four-pronged case for Obama's electability. One, primary-focused, is that Clinton has big problems too.

He also pointed out that Obama's actually been winning white men and younger white voters.

And looking ahead, he pointed to the issues: "They won't agree with John McCain on issues like the economy and health care. And so I think that we are going to get the vast, vast majority of Democratic voters," he said.

Finally, the Obama campaign is counting on its ability to change the electorate -- a powerful argument, if one with real limits.

"If Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee, I think turnout amongst African-Americans, turnout amongst all voters under 40, and our ability to register new voters is going to be a very important piece of the puzzle," he said.

Besides the obvious "duh" about the racist white guy vote comment, do you notice how he says high turnout of historically non-voting demographics will be the difference and NOT anything involving qualifications or platform-based? "We don't have issues, but hell, if we can coax enough ignoramuses to come out and vote, we can win! CHANGE!"

HombreMurcielago - I really like Barack Hussein Obama's message of hope and change. He is a breadth of fresh air imo.

Do you have this saved as a macro?

The type of people that wouldn't vote for a black president are going to be republican voters. I think the statement is in the context of whether you should vote for hillary or obama and whether voting for one or the other will drive away potential votes for the democrats. IMO if obama wins the nomination he won't drive away anyone who was planning to vote democrat but he may bring a whole new demographic of people that generally don't vote.

HISTORY. Things change over time. And anyway, I'm not saying all republicans are racists, just that most (white) racists are probably republicans.

You're making the same ignorant statement as Obama's campaign manager here and failing to consider the point made in previous posts that the Obama camp is, yet again, playing the race card, yet turning around and blabbering about "no room for the race card" in politics and being supported by an equally racist demographic as McCain.

To re-phrase: how is it worse that (supposedly) all racist whites support a white candidate when virtually all blacks are similarly racist by only considering the black candidate?

Their recent past performance maybe? Maybe the performance of the party when some of the members grandparents were still alive? Or would you like everyone to be judged on the actions of their ancestors?

Do I think it's worse? No. Did I say I did? No. Again, how is the original statement wrong? It's just a statement of fact and how voter demographics break down. I'm not making a moral judgement about it.
