my first Gathering this Sunday Aug 10
more excited than nervous
more eager+sure than scared+unsure
i've been training very hard

i respect the fact i will get 'hurt'
want to avoid getting 'injured'

i have a buddy going to watch me fight
he'll take notes and help me remember my matches
will use his notes, his memory and my memory
when i post back here reporting in
how it went

big THANK YOU to Guru Crafty Dog and everyone
at DBMA and all people doing the support work
to put this event on

I will represent Baltic Dog's GFC crew
from N.Cali Bay Area
which i'm a part of

these past two GFC fight seasons
have been evolutionary for me inside and out

39 hrs to GO TIME!
*grin*

Quick report:

very glad i went
met a lot of very cool people

fought 3 matches
i didn't aggress enough
didn't attack with stick in combos / follow up

i ended up take a beating all three matches
but some people watching my matches
told me i stood my ground so that's good

one veteran warrior said when i came off the mat
that i can definitely take a beating -
but that i also need to give one too

so that's what i'll be working on

i'm pretty wrecked but nothing permanent
people at work know i'm in a fight club
and so telling them why i look beat up
isn't a huge shocker for them heh

My Gratitude to Dan from OH for the knife fight, Matt of L.A. for the stick fight and Nick "Pappy Dog" for the last fight - a stick fight - he and another Gathering veteran encouraged me to fight one more time. Out in the match he waved me on to attack and hit him. So that was really cool.

Thanks to all - had a blast!

What makes a man is standing up, and then taking it.

other times i'm like - all good - was my 1st gathering and its different than in the garage. this is like 200 spectators, 40+ fighters. the Big Leauges! :)
had a blast, want to hit up Aug 2009's.

Steve,

We have all had our reasons for doing it. And for not doing it.

I, for one, do not regret even one hit I received. I gave a few back for the ones that I got.

Other than blades it is as real as we make it which is why I am still doing it.

Second and third generations of fighters developing the same positive skill sets makes me know that we are on the right path.

Perfect? No.

Closer than anything else out there? Absolutely.

Phil -

Sorry brother, I strong disagree. You know I think the world of you on a person level. I consider myself your friend, and will always have your back if you ever need it.

Going back to tuhons camp when you judged my match, you gave it to the black dude because i was moving in and out (as Leo taught us "get in and get out")(other judges gave it to me )

THATS REAL -

standing there and swinging like a caveman (ala Arlen) is not NOT as real as it gets

the head gear lets your crash and bash - which is your definition of how i should have fought my match

I learned that i can take a blow and keep fighting / tested my metal(mettle?) at the gatherings, but thats it - IMO it's not realistic fighting -

I'm not even going to go into the whole is a stick a stick or a training implement that really is a sword -

here's my point though

you dont need Alexandre Grahm Bell making money off you to train the same way

tuhon was having fights in the streets if NYC and manila -

Punong guro edward was doing it in his backyard - etc etc

dudes are doing it in their garage in SF

got no problem if people want to fight with sticks for whatever reason they choose to

i have a problem with sheeple flocking to Marcs to PAY him, and then he exploits them and makes money off filming them -

ecrima digest certain is sent to enough people that ANYONE could but together their own thing

I hear ya. I'm very slow to 'get aggro' or whatever and always fight with intensity but often miss the chance to finish the fight, really push it and hurt the opponent. Usually it takes getting 'stung' by something and, of course, during the sparring, things don't hurt that normally would.

It takes practicing the 'burst' and getting aggro in training, maybe with a mate helping and calling out to 'ramp it up'. After a while it can change your style or approach. Even in the type Gathering among 'friends' or fellow practitioners, it's hard to really get the aggro up until the contest is over.

Good luck in the upcoming!

I didn't realize there was a cost to take part in a Gathering. I was under the impression you had to be a member of an affiliate dog brother club.

How much does it cost to attend a Gathering?

Attending and fighting in are two different things.

To be a spectator I believe the fee is around $15.  To fight, it costs you nada.
