snippet from the article - The current study made by the Stanford University School of Medicine suggests that people over 50 who ran regularly over several years suffered fewer disabilities, had a longer span of active life and lowered their risk of dying early by 50 percent compared to those who were, as often they are called, couch-potatoes.

Nice, though I hate running so I'm going to pretend sprinting stairs is the same.

So basically, money and time had to be spent to do a study to tell people that being active and doing functional movement is better for health and longevity, than sitting around and doing nothing?

Yes! Because if those researchers didn't have grants, they couldn't afford to sit in comfy chairs in front of computers all day. And what's the alternative to THAT?

Studies like this provide the basic science to support common wisdom. They also helps justify things like having medical insurance cover preventative care, regular checkups, and provide discounts for use of gym memberships.
