No.... this makes karate look good (all though I need a pro member to show it for me... I fail I know)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Woe5AQjBOdE

Shotokan ain't all that great... Take from someone who did it for ten years. The kicks may look good but that's about it. And that video is old. 90% of shotokan competitions will DQ you for contact on that level.

Kyokushin, Shidokan and similar styles are what karate should be.

If more Karate guys trained to actually fight like that, they might not be thought of as a joke.

I trained it in Ireland and we weren't allowed to punch in the face. The biggest problem I have with Shotokan (just going off the video as it is a Shotokan one) are the stances. Hands too low, legs too wide. I remember going up against Kyokushin guys and they would sweep me all day long. Wado is a little better of the "softer styles" but I do prefer Kyokushin nowadays.

Thanks for posting the video...

Funny how you're allowed to fall on your ass trying to kick someone in the air.

Nobones, I've seen all levels of Shotokan competition. I've competed at all levels outside of World championships. The vast majority keep their hands down and their stance is too long.

Kyukoshin and Wado have a set stance like any other fighting style and it's far more practical.

Any effect striking style generates it's power from the hips, it's not exclusive to Shotokan.

Machida is a phenom and shows what Karate can do in MMA. Long live Machida

If Shotokan Karate is good enough for Ryu, Ken and Akuma, it sure is good enough for me!

As said previous Shotokan is ok but Kyokushin and it's offshoots are the way to go.

Japanese Shotakan, like Machida trained in, is a damn fine martial art. Kyokushin is *badass* as everyone in the know knows, but I'm not convinced that it is better than other real Karate; it may be, but the variable in the equation is that at least 1/2 of the hardcore Karate schools worldwide teach Kyokushin -- watered down Kyokushin might suck just as bad as the average strip-mall "Krotty" BS. Uechi-ryu is another TOUGH style. There are some insane Uechi-ryu clips on youtube.
