Just curious, are there any breeds out there you would automatically rule out owning? Or, if you are even pickier, what are the only breeds you would own. I hope that makes sense.

The list I would own is shorter, so I'll list it.

Breeds I'd own (off the top of my head):

Rat Terrier
Jack Russell Terrier
Patterdale Terrier
Labrador
APBT/AST
GSD
Border Collie
Boston Terrier
French Bulldog

I think that's it. Although I'm sure if I met the right dog of any breed or mix I could change my tune. The one I own know is a classic pound puppy.

I'd stab my mama's eyeballs before I'd own an Afghan hound. Not 9/11 prejudice or anything. I just can't fucking stand this breed. The coat? That rat-like tail? Shiver me timbers!!!

That said, the breeds I'd own:

APBT
Dutch Shepherd
GSD
Malinois
AB
Dogo
Airedale terrier
Patterdale terrier
Labrador retriever
Blue/Red heeler
Catahoula
Blue tick hound
Black mouth cur

I wouldn't own a pit bull, a rottweiler, or anything that fits in a purse or barks a lot.

I'm on the fence about dobermans.

I own a boxer. Best breed in the world. I've also considered, American Bulldog and Doberman

I have no desire to own a Chow

first preference is apbt. cant really see myself owning anything else at this point.

after that, I'd pretty much go with most terriers, doxies and bull breeds (we're applying to be a foster for Doxie rescue of North America)

LGDs and mastiffs are further down the list

I'd never own:

chow
rottie
any sled dog
any shiba/jindo type dog
any spaniel
99% of toy breeds

MikeZev - 99% of toy breeds
+1

Dogs with jobs, sure! But I just don't see the need for these new high fashion accessories...er, I mean designer breeds. Pisses me off.

Not crazy about overly maintenced breeds like the Bedlington terrier, Komondor, Puli, Old English sheepdog, etc.

I also wouldn't own breeds that drool or ones with loose skin/skin problems, like Sharpei and Neapolitan mastiff, etc.

The Chow-Chow is out, too. Thinking I share Mike's bias against Spitz breeds. Dunno what, exactly, but I've never cared for them.

But you can definitely add some more hunting breeds to my list of would own's:

Plott hound
Coon hound
American/English Fox hound
Weimaraner
Vizsla
American/English pointers
German short-haired pointer
Springer spaniel
Field spaniel
Brittany

All from proven working lines, of course! ;o)

I forgot to add Weimaraners and Fiests to my "would own" list.

For all intensive purposes, I could never see myself owning:

Rotties
Boxers
toy breeds
Mastiffs
Bulldogs (English and American)
Chows
Airedales
Shelties

I'm just talking purebred type dogs though. Usually my favorite dogs are mutts.

I guess I would have a Fiest as well. I always thought my mutt was some type of terrier mix, but now I'm starting to think he's part Fiest.

The Wikipedia page probably is the best thing for this.

It's probably just a term southerners use for certain type of small mutt.

When people ask what kind of dog I have I tell them I honestly don't know, but country types usually insist that he's a feist. i had never heard of it either.

I own a Doberman. And the Afghan Hound was rated the dumbest of the dogs, Dobes are in the top 3. Dont want to even say what dog was rated most intelligent on the scale I saw but it rhymes with standard poodle.

I currently have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks. I have owned Rottweilers, a Dalmatian, a Doberman, a Weimeraner, and had a roommate with a Miniature Pinscher.

Next on our list is a Spinone Italiano. Further down the road, Irish Wolfhound, and probably another Rottie. I'd also like a mastiff of some sort, but I don't want to deal with the drool.

I'm with you guys on the 'no purse-sized dogs'. I'm not a big fan of the yappers, at all.

Great Danes are awesome. The only problem with them is that their life expectancy is SO short. Of course, with proper diet and care, I've seen Danes live well over 10 years.
