I watched a show tongiht on either TLC or Animal Plant - can't remember which - called Dogs 101. I believe it's a new series that will be on Friday 8 EST. They profile five different breeds and give basic information about them - what they were originally bred for, temperment, trainability, health issues, other important factors, etc.

Tonight they profiled the French Bulldog, Labrador, Poodle, Airedale Terrier, and Chihuahua. Pretty neat stuff - I know I leanred a lot.

Highlights of things I didn't know:

- Frenchies can't naturally mate

- Labs have webbed feet and were really a type of Newfie

- some group lists the Poodle as the "smartest" breed and they were once water retreivers

- Airedales were once the most popular dogs in the U.S.

I don't remember all of them, but I noticed next week they are profiling the Shar Pei, Boston Terrier, and Rottweiller.

My apologies for the many misspelings.

Don't get into it with a bad attitude. It's just some basic information on breeds. Nothing really training oriented. It's like a video version of the breed's Wiki page.

How did you like it Mike?

I noticed in the episode in a week and half is on JRTs, German Shepards and Weims.

Is it anything like Breed All About It or K-9 to 5?

It sounds like Breed All About It, on speed. 4-5 breeds in 30 minutes? Seems like just enough information to dangerously inform people about breeds, to me.

Still haven't seen this show. Will have to set my alarm clock for 8pm Friday, and maybe tie a string around my finger so I don't forget...

Anyone know what breeds are featured this week? Really want to check it out.

They're gonna screw up the Dobie segment for sure, but the Mini Pin and Whippet ones should be cool.

Don't expect to much. It usually just briefly talks about the breed's history, temperament, health, trainability, and sometimes a cool story about one dog of that breed.

Well, I'm not expecting it to be a Breed All About It or K-9 to 5 but I'll check it out regardless.

Yep, they're screwing up the Dobermann segment just as I suspected. *sigh*

The Mini Pin segment wasn't too bad. But now with the Irish Setter it's becoming clear they're completely ignoring the working aspects and bloodlines of these breeds, as well as the reasons for their health defects and how and where an owners chances of getting good dogs is improved...ie: by not buying from puppy boutiques or those breeding for conformation alone.

That shit about the Dobermann being bred away from aggression over the last 10-15yrs is more or less true(ie: it's been a lot longer then that, but at least they admitted it). But the problem is they're suggesting it's a good thing for one of the few breeds that was created specifically for protection/guardianship. *rolleyes*
