Here is my criteria:

-Must be a bolt-action
-under $700
-would like something with a little power behind it

any advice and education on what to look for as well would be much appreciated! I'm looking to start at the range, then progress to white tails.

Thanks!

What type of terrain will you be hunting.  I have a Marlin 30/30 for wooded terrain.  30-6 or a 270 would be good for more open field of fire.

Under 700 with scope? Most "seasoned shooters" will say spend the same amount of $$$ on your scope as your rifle.

Burris $200-300 / Weatherbuy Vangard $399 "the walmart weatherby" = $600-700

Nikon $300-500 / Tikka Whitetail $549 add $25 for magnum calibers, great gun and great value = $849-1074

Leupold $400-$800 / Win Mo 70 - Rem Mo 700 either one right around $800 = $1200-1600

Swarovski $800-$1200 / Sako 85 $1600 - Weatherby MarkV $1800
= $2400-3000

That being said I love my $250 burris on my $750 Winchester Model 70 in 300WSM

Go to big 5 and get a mosin nagant m91-30 for about 100 bucks. Buy a tin of 440 rounds of ammo for around 100 bucks.

Clean rifle after each use.

Iron sights hit nice at 200 yards. Do you really need to make a 500 yard shot??

Good call on the Mosin. I have a good collection of M44 and M38. Great value and power.
