Hey soundground readers,

I just bought myself a nice little soprano ukulele. I have never played any instrument in my life, other than a recorder in grade 3. I was doing some reading and people say that learning an instrument is really good for your brain, and the uke' is a fun way to start.

I am looking for some good websites/videos/books to learn how to shred this bitch. Any tips, suggestions, general ukulele talk, or insults for playing a babies guitar are welcomed and encouraged.

I'm honestly not trying to be an asshole, just curious. When someone is trying to decide on an instrument to learn, why do they choose a ukulele?

Ukes are fun.
Do you have any guitar/other music experience? (edited cause I reread and you said that you don't)

Otherwise, start with learning chords and playing songs.

www.chordie.com

You can pick the songs you like, pick the easiest and simplest chords, and then strum "folk Strum" Dwn/Dwn/up-Up/Dwn/Up.

This site allows the person to pick which instrument they want the song/chords to be in. Such as Guitar/ukulele/banjo/mandolin, this option is on the right side of the screen of your song choice, under the "Tuning" option.

On the homepage click on the Public Books tab and there is collection of people popular Uke's songs.

Youtube has great instructionals as well

El Maquina, this is an MMA.tv forum. You are supposed to be, hell, encouraged to be an asshole :)

I chose the ukulele because I was interested in learning a simple instrument that not EVERYONE plays. I've been listening to some Hawaiian music lately and dig the mellow sounds. I asked around with friends and they said it would be a good, fun way to start on music. The people at the instrument store had all played it at some point and said it was a blast and a good intro.

Thanks for the advice wiley and el_clap, I'll check those out when I get home from work today.

Oh yes, I'm sure ukulele can get you laid. Don't you think it probably works for this guy?

I wish I could play any instrument this well.

Yes Jake is the one of the two best ukers alive, and that video of Ukulele weeps is probably the greatest performance of a ukulele ever.

After about 3-4 months of serious playing, I'm having a blast with this thing, and have learned a bunch of songs.

For others reference, these are my favorite sites:

http://dominator.ukeland.com/index2.shtml
http://home.arcor.de/crazydawg/tabs.html

Two sites with alot of great solo ukulele arrangements. Solo in that sense you don't need to sing, because the vocals are played on the strings.

And the best of them all, the mma.tv of ukulele:

ukuleleunderground.com

Alot of great tutorial and tips videos on the main site. And the forums here are insanely good with tabs, advice, just everything.

Here's my ukulele band:

www.myspace.com/thebobbymcgees

Splits opinion like the OG....by def' the most original ukulele music out there right now!

Here's our latest interview..straight offa the front cover:
http://www.tweeasfuck.com/fanzine_05.html

Yeah....that's me with the beard.

Song on my last EP called "Genki Sudo"...was fun watching all the indie-underground journalists trying to work out the link.

One of the 4 big T.V. stations recently picked up one of my songs for an advert...which was kinda mad:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQb7N9GtLJg

Album out next month...my ambition is to make enough money off of it to just spend 6 months in they gym getting my ass back in shape!
