Gah, my kick landed wrong.  I was just drilling a 1-2-switch kick combo on the pads, when I either misjudged the distance or lost my balance & ended up kicking with my toes.  This occurred two nights ago, so I got an X-ray yesterday morning.  They said nothing looked broken, but I still have to wait a few days for a specialist give me his/her say.  My foot was quite swollen, and I was in *terrible* pain the night it happened, I was sure I had broken something.

Anyway, they gave me crutches with some anti-inflammatory pills.

*Is this a common injury?
*How long is the healing process?
*Does it ever heal completely?
*Once healed, is there anything that protects the toes while kicking?

It is not as swollen as before, but it does hurt if I attempt to walk.

It seems to be common, at least I have observed a few Thai boxing coaches (retired pro fighters) who exhibit very crooked toes which obviously had been broken, and healed crooked.

Don't know how long to heal, but apparently sometimes it may heal crooked.

Personally I always wear wrestling shoes- I know barefoot is the tradition, and the requirement for competition. But I'm not training to be a pro fighter, I wanna save my toes.

 I appreciate the input Jove!

By wrestling shoes, do yo mean something like this?

Does anyone else know of any other gear that protects the toes specifically in case of a screw-up?

yes, like those. They do help protect the ankle, foot and toes, yet are soft enough that they don't hurt your sparring partner (at least, no one has ever complained about it to me...)

I broke my foot on a skull about a year ago. Took about 6 weeks to be usable (pads etc.)
