i'm hoping someone can give me some advice on this because it sounds a little fishy to me.

i received a letter from my company saying that we are to verify that our vehicles (which we use for work--sales) are insured 100k/300k/100k in terms of liability. i've been working for them for 9 years as well as many of the other people this affects. i found out that i have only a quarter of that (which is fine by hawaii insurance minimums) and was hired with just the criteria of "must have car insurance" and was never required to have those minimums.

well, i just increased it and it comes out to $600 more a year.

can they legally force me to do this and not compensate me for the additional expense?

what if it had been $2000 more a year? $5000? it just doesn't sound right to me to drop this on us.

help please

yes its legal. they are worried about liability if you, for example, go on a rampage and run over some micros

Are you compensated for mileage? The compensation rate is supposed to cover your insurance. Otherwise, it's deductible from your taxes.

BTW, are you an actual employee or an independent contractor with your own GET license?

Then it's time to renegotiate the car allowance. They've changed their side, you need to change yours.

i could, but lately it's like pulling teef. i just don't go to work rarely ever. figure, use my car less evens the score.

that said, i'm gonna take the lack of encouragement as a "you have no ground to stand on legally" slap. :(

Maybe not. Get with me in the new year and I'll see if we can write up a scary breach of contract letter that'll make them lower your insurance requirements or up your mileage pay.

We should talk in person over lunch sometime. Give me an email address and we can arrange something for the first part of January.

If this is your personal automobile and you have other types of insurance (like owning a home) - then you can get an "umbrella" liability policy that has a huge maximum but that doesn't cost all that much.

Getting the big max for just a car can be expensive, but if you get the umbrella liability it is much more affordable.

You should check this out if you have other liability insurances.

Anonymous?

Let's see, I could send a letter on my letterhead...cite retalitation concerns as reason for anonymity...ask for a blanket cease-and-desist...

Wouldn't do anything, but might be fun for shits'n'giggles.
