I'm having some trouble picking an MOS. Can someone here recommend something that you think would be cool or what I should avoid? I was thinking maybe a light wheel mechanic? I think my main concern is that I want to be promoted in a decent amount of time. So what is a MOS where I can get promoted faster?

Thank you for the replies. My recruiter gave me this list and said these are the jobs that I qualify for.

I was thinking about maybe being a light wheel mechanic but I guess I didnt qualify for it because of my ASVAB score.

I dont know anything about these jobs can someone maybe recommend something here?

If you ever plan on going SF do 18X because they pretty much breed you into one.

Like BigDaddyPerkins said, 13F has fast promotions and lots of schools

I have heard good and bad things about 35M, I was talking to a Civ guy that worked with them and from what he told me it seemed like a pretty fun job.

I actually entered as an 18X but got reclassed to 88N because of medical reasons. With a score of 70 on the ASVAB I would think there would be more open to you.

I actually like the 88N (Transportaton Coordinator) job because it gives me extra time to train because you'll pretty much be a FOBbit when you get deployed. The only thing is that you will need to qualify for a secret clearance and have a GT score of 110 or higher.

not 100% sure but I believe it is enlisting as an 11B and going to Airbourne school right after OSUT.

Pretty much enlisting Airbourne Infantry

11X is a goood path, (if really want something high speed see if you can get the Ranger Option in your contract so that you can try out for RIP after OSUT and ABN.

35M offers opportunities post-army with NSA, etc, (as does 35W but 35M is more hands on.) The higher you score on the DLAT, the more "high speed" a language you can learn.

Stay away from 92F you'll get so bored you'll want to take a hostage.

If you go SF you will make E-6 very fast and get to learn some cool shit along the way. If your planning on doing this for the full 20 years then its a great place to start.

11X is just a basic infantry MOS. I went in as an 11X in 1993. Once I got downrange at Benning, they grouped all of us 11x guys together in one platoom within the company. Out of about 53 11x recruits, 40 of use were reclassified to 11C (HOOAH!), the rest were split up into 11B and 11M. I think one guy actually went the 11H route.

Not sure if there is any truth to this or not, but one of the DIs (an 11B) said that they put the guys with the highest scores into the 11H path followed by 11M, 11C, & 11B. It seems like this would have made some of the 11Bs feel bad as they had the lowest scores (if that was the truth). However, nobody ever gave a crap as we were all ready to go to our untit and blow shit up.

Not all of our 11X guys went to jump school. Six or seven of us went out of 53. IIRC, all of us were 11C except for one 11B who was set up to join a National Guard LRS/SF unit in Pennsylvania.

As far as the RIP option, it may have changed, but when I was in that was only open after you had successfully completed jump school. I thought about it, but decided against it as I had seen enough of Benning to wanna stay there any longer. My friend went through RIP as an 11C and his duty stationed was immediately changed after he completed RIP. He was scheduled to go to 6th ID (Alaska) with us, but got reassigned to 2nd Bat at Ft. Lewis.

If you get through RIP, you're pretty much gonna be going to either Georgia or Washington state. 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Ranger batallions...that's an easy way to narrow down your duty station options. =)

To my knowledge, the 18x pathway is a post 911 MOS made open to fresh enlistees. It used to be a bitch to get into that. You had to work your way in through a regular unit and pay your dues so to speak.

To be honest with you, you might wanna consider a job that could get you into a career outside of the military. I went in with full intentions of pulling a 20 year bid as I had nothing left to come home to except farmwork or factory work. I got injured on a jump and thanks to military cutbacks (sarcastic thumbs up!) I was told that the Army was not willing to pay the money to re-train me in a different MOS. Therefore I was seperated on a medical discharge.

Think about your future, bro. All that HOOAH, blow 'em up stuff can come later if you stay in. Get into an MOS that can transfer over into a decent civilian job.

Just my 2 cents.
