I have reffed two four second ones, so it has to be a lot faster than that. This is, truly, a sport where anything can happen.

Kirik, how do you become a mma ref? Do you have to be connected?

that's just a joke, on the whole I think ref's do an incredible job in MMA.  It has to be one of the most difficult sports to officiate in history, considering the sole discretion to determine the end of any contest, that moves at the speed of light, is in the hands of one man.  Not easy at all.

Pretty much 4 seconds. One second to close the distance, one second to hit the guy, one second for the ref to stop it, one second for the timekeeper to hit stop.

The Bang vs Goulet fight in reality was only four seconds long.

Has Goulet ever been KO'ed before the clock started?  I'm willing to bet he has at some point.

I had a 3 second one in a small show in Lowell, IN. Tiny ring, opponent who kept his hands down, one high kick when the bell rang.

I actually saw what looked like a sub one second KO once though. It was a mixed show that had some traditional martial arts matches (pretty hard contact stuff), some kickboxing and some mma. For some reason, they wanted to start everyone from a crossed wrist position, so essentially started you off in clinch range. Most of the MMA matches started off with immediate grappling, most of the karate/tma matches started off by people circling away. One guy just fired a jab straight into the other guys chin when the bell rang. Dropped the guy cold.

about almost a year ago someone posted a video of a 2 second KO from a fight in japan. the bell rang and the guy charged and ended up running into the other guys punch. then at the end of it both their crews jump in the ring and almost fight

There's been many occasions where both fighters marches to the middle of the ring and exchanges blows and the first one thrown leads to a ko. The official time depends on how long the ref lets it go on after the konckdown
