Anyone here have much experience with Subarus?  I have an 05 Forester XT with 75k.  It started throwing this code recently.

Any ideas?

Intake Cam Position Timing Over Advanced - Bank 1

Description:

How does a P0011 code trigger the check engine light? This code will trigger the check engine light under the following condition:

The comprehensive component monitor, referred to as the CCM, monitors the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) position for over-advanced cam timing. If the cam timing exceeds a maximum calibrated limit or is stuck in an advanced position, the check engine light will come on and set this trouble code.

Possible Causes:
Incorrect camshaft timing
VCT solenoid valve stuck open or continuous oil flow to piston chamber
Camshaft advance mechanism binding, or faulty VCT unit

Diagnostic Help:
This check engine light code is caused by a mechanical fault of the VCT unit or related components, so there is no need for electrical diagnosis. Possible symptoms may include rough idle, stall or hard start. Refer to manufacturer specific component tests for the VCT unit. You may also use the "Get Help" link if you need specifications or have any other related questions. Remember to refer to an appropriate manual for specific

Found this on a site, maybe that helps?

Any work performed on your car recently?

 Nope.

I reset the code and changed the oil.  We'll see if it throws the code again.

I've read that its commonly a precursor to the turbo shitting the bed.

If that happens, I will not be a happy camper.  Its only got 75k on the clock.

In the case of being a precurser, it usually means the owner ran the car without changing the oil for 15k miles.

A similar code happens in lexus/toyotas for that reason.

Or........you timing belt/s are loose or have skipped a tooth meaning the car has tried to compensate with the variable timing mechanism but has run out of authority.

Yeah, i don't have any of the oil change records to know for sure.  But some of the more difficult maintence has been been done, so I can assume that they were changing the oil regularly.  i hope...  Regardless, i pulled a sample and I am sending in for analysis.

I don't think its skipped a tooth or two.  I reset the code and its yet to throw it again.

Some stuff online suggest that its oil related.  Sometimes the avcs gets gummed up and it forces the CEL.  Alot of guys have changed the oil and its gone away.

We will see.

Some cars have a screen on the oil supply to the actuator.

In celica GTS with VVTI, they get clogged.

i've had it for a while.  It is/was my commuting/second car.  And I planned to give it to the gf when her Explorer dies and I get a new G8 or CTS or something....

But, her fucking Explorer has been bulletproof at 175k miles while my Subaru has had it share of problems at only 75k miles.  Her Ford may outlive the Forester.  LOL  Fuck me.
