he does deserve a league wide retirement, he is without a doubt the greatest hockey player ever.

Don Cherry gives it to Orr...who scored a ton of points while playing defense...he revolutionized the position he could skate and score like a forward and was fast enough to get back on defense...but Gretsky did rule but i dont think he deserved a league wide retirment, Michael jordan doesnt get one so he shouldnt.

Gretzky was far more dominant statiscally over his career than Jordan was.
Take a look at this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NHL_statistical_leaders#Regular_season_points

It turns out that Gretzky and Jordan actually played, not only in different leagues, but in ALL-TOGETHER-DIFFERENT SPORTS!!

Orr is definately up there but imo just didnt play enough to warrant league wide retirement.

Also using Don Cherry to support him as the best player is meaningless. Cherry is an idiot and a senile old man.

If you retired Orrs number then you'd have to retire Lemieux's(though nobody will wear 66 in the nhl for a long time) and even consider Howe and Richard.

Not to mention how 4 is a common number and 66 and 99 identify easily with those 2

ur logic is orrs number is league wide then lemieuxs must be and then how and then richard...im using the same logic with gretskys...though he was great he wasnt the only great player and therefore shouldnt get that type of treatment

he was the GREATEST which why his and only his number will be retired, not Lemieuxs, not Orrs only GRETZKYS

That is how it should be retiring numbers should only be reserved for the GREATEST ever, and Orr and Lemieux arent close in career accomplishments and impact on the game

Orr changed the way defense was played...he made defense possible to score and get back on d..Gretsky scored goals...alot of goals..but i dont he changed his position, orr did...+124 in 70-71 while scoring 37 goals 102 assists as a defense man in one season.. 2nd highest plus minus of all time at +597 and had 915 points in only 657 games...if he played 20 years like grestky it would be no question

FIRST OF ALL, no one is going to take you serious CSF if you keep spelling it "Gretsky". It's a "Z" not an "S".

Just watch a bobby orr highlight...does that look like a defensmen playing hockey or a great forward...talk about taking the puck from behind the net going end to end as a defensemen and if he missed he was back on d immediately...

"Losing Bobby", said Gordie Howe, "was the greatest blow the National Hockey League has ever suffered."Gordie Howe

using +/- as a number to say he is one of the goats is stupid. the plus minus rules have changed since then and it is an overrated stat anyway.

he is unquestionably one of the 3 best players to ever play the game and you dont need to tell me stats or to watch highlights because i know all about bobby orr.

but the fact is he isnt the greatest player ever and doesnt deserve to have his number retired league wide

The Miami Heat have a Jordan 23 Bulls jersey hanging in their rafters.....True story.
