Airless tires only look hideous because you're used to inflated rubber tires.
On a bicycle, a heavy rubber inflated wheel without spokes would look bad. Airless tires on a bike don't take turns well though.

definitely I think the next breakthrough technology area will be in energy production. Solar, geo-thermal, etc. The development of electric vehicles to consumer friendly stage, and the reduction of the "energy footprint" of many of our current technologies.
