Fun stuff. Don't read the comments, it's a full on shitstorm like usual, a lot of trashing of the Waster guy.

Looks like the guy with the waster is a little unsure of himself, and afraid of hurting the other guy on the thrust.

I'd really be interested in seeing two evenly matched opponents, with those new nylon sparring wasters that flex on the thrust.

Here's one of those nylon(polypropylene?) wasters being compared to an Albion Meyer practice sword, a high-end blunt.

Martinburke: Well sparring with real wood is always something that can be a bit scary. All you have to do is have someone get a little wild and you can do some real damage.

Oh, I unfortunately have WAY too much personal experience in getting whacked with wasters.:)

Not sure how familiar you are with the German langschwert system, but it's very much an offensive style with lots of cuts designed to bind the opponent's sword with your own point on line for a thrust. The prime objective with the system is seizing the initiative, or fighting in the "Vor"(the "before"). You defend by attacking. That guy was being WAY too defensive.

A lightish, less than full speed cut isn't very painful, but almost ANY thrust with a wooden waster is going to hurt. As I watched the video, I kept seeing opportunities for the longsword guy to bind and thrust, or bind and slice the bokken user's hand. It just seemed like the longsword guy was holding back, and the bokken guy was blissfully unaware(or trusting the other guy wouldn't)

Martin: Yeah, that was my perception as well. It's hard to play using those types of weapon-analogues without getting bashed up.

I couldn't even imagine going 1/2 speed without at least a mask...

Ugh...the ones that I hate are the thrusts that slide up my chest into my throat.I have high hopes for these nylon blunts. It'll be easier to get sparring partners if they work out.

The Nova Scrima guys have a DVD out. Very good. What they do is standardize all the escrima stuff, practicing it like one would do Western European martial arts. They drill in a few variations, getting down the parries and ripostes, wearing the standing DogBrother gear plus light body armor, though they don't hit at 100% during training. They always include an alive segment, even when training with heavier weapons. They look VERY similar to Top Dog Eric Knaus, with his classic, inward leap to a crouch for the knee shot in many examples. Don't see the snakey stick, though. (Could be they don't need it, able to rely on the classically drilled moves like European fencing).

Thus, when they fight they look a lot like they do in the drills, classical and not just two guys throwing caveman #1 strikes at each other.

To me, they've taken escrima to the next level. You can search youtube for more and various 'other' sites.

Gotta love those bendy metal sword and dagger. They also train sword and buckler (a small metal shield which looks like a flying saucer).

It is interesting seeing the European styles. Everyone thinks the Asian styles are 'superior' due to all the movies and how the European styles are represented in those movies. But it is easy to see from these videos that it is not the style but rather the fighter.

All are beautiful to watch for sure.

Also, too much value in 'technique' and how someone looks while fighting.

As we've seen in MMA, it's not very often that fighting looks completely pretty.

Another "alternative" technique, this time with rapiers. George Silver would have approved:)

Some cool plays with longswords, slowed down and a little broad for clarity:

Here's a clip of an ARMA guy on the pell. Must think his zwerchau needs a little practice.:)

http://www.thearma.org/Videos/on_the_Pell.mp4

You'll get lots of differing opinions on ARMA, but I think most of the controversy stems from John Clements being such a polarizing little turd and the cult of personality he fosters there.

It's a damn shame too, because I think he knows his shit, and there's lots of good vids and info on there. This "unified theory" of his seems to be on the right track. Once you aggressively seek the bind, the whole thing really comes together: strokes, counters, Ringen...it all fuses.

There are some really bad videos on youtube of people interpreting fectbuchs, but Clement's stuff looks far different.

These are good times for WMA. Too bad one of the major influences is a tool.

The LARPers don't like ARMA because they actually "gear up and bang".
