So, I got a kayak for my birthday. I got a tip that there was a long swamp/river accessible not too far away. I threw the kayak in the truck and gave it a shot.
I chose going upstream from the launch point, which turned out to be the hard way to go. Lots of dams, blockages, and fallen trees over the water. But, I was out for 2.5 hours and never saw another human (except for some driving by on an overpass).

This is my slideshow.

Fallen tree, low clearance.

Scrunch down and limbo...

Dragging the kayak over a beaver dam.

It was beautiful. Lots of birds, turtles, beavers...
Totally serene.

Next time, I might try heading downstream first, as I was told it's miles of swamp river that takes about 10 hours to go down and back.

ClayK - Where is this?
The Great Swamp in Patterson, NY.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Swamp_(New_York)

It's right over the NY/CT border so its pretty easy for me to get to.
It's just about time for me to head back, actually. This time, I'm going the other way down the stream to see what that's like.

Cool stuff. I kayak on the fairly shallow streams near my farm and get out for longer lake trips once or twice a year. I haven't done a lot of swamp kayaking, but I am looking at spending some time in some Mississippi backwaters in Oct.

Mississippi would be cool.
I just got back from a trip to Delaware, where I subjected my family to a kayak eco-tour of the marshlands. Man, what a cool ecosystem. Herons, egrets, osprey, eagles, jellyfish, crabs...
I'm hoping one of the kids caught the bug while we were out.
