I would have thought the opposite, that free running wouldn't imply anything necessarily, while parkour has all the associations.

Ironically, it's political. Isn't it always?

The original crew (David Belle, Sebastian Foucain, etc) used the name Parkour, but when Foucain left, he wanted to give HIS stuff its own name, and he started calling it Free-Running. He shifted his emphasis to the more "expressive" and "artistic" aspects of what he does, which are most easily recognized via tricking, flipping, and the like.

You won't see a Parkour Traceur backflip, but you could see a Free-runner do it.

Martial arts is for the fight, Parkour is for the flight...its the other half of the equation.
