Travis takes gold at Grapplers Quest!
Big day for SBG on Saturday, July 11th. First up, long time SBG Coach Travis Davison competed in Grapplers Quest Las Vegas. On Friday Travis entered the absolute division (Travis weighed in around 160), with his first opponent being 260, Travis went on to beat him. Travis narrowly lost his last match that day on a 2 point sweep to world champion black belt Cleber Luciano. Travis finished with abronze in the absolute, at 160 that is a hell of a performance!

The next day Travis competed in his own weight class and brought home a gold medal in the brown belt division! Way to go Travis, we are all very proud of you.

3 athletes compete, three gold medals won!
The same day Travis was competing in Vegas, three athletes from the Portland Gym drove up to Seattle for the big Pac NW championshipsJonathan Lee andChris Stearns entered in the purple belt division, and Tim Edman entered in theblue belts. Jonathan beat all of his opponents for a gold medal win. Chris Stearns (who was awarded his purple just two weeks previously) beat all of his opponents, and faced long time Impact purple belt Andy Wong in the finals. Chris won that match winning the gold medal. And Tim swept his matches, also winning gold

Three athletes entered, three golds won! In addition to this Team SBG wound up coming in third in overall team points, even though they entered only three athletes. Compare that to Gracie Barra, who took first in team points, but entered over 60 competitors.

SBG Iceland's Gunnar Nelson takes silver at the worlds!
John Kavanagh brown belt Gunnar Nelson won silver in Men's Brown Belt Middle Weight at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship (Mundials), after losing the finals against Gabriel Goulart on close points.

Noted BJJ Coach Renzo Gracie commented on how extraordinary it was for a new gym like SBG Iceland to produce a World Champion in such short time. Those of us familiar with the SBGi training methods, coaches, and athletes are not surprised. Congrats to Gunnar, and to SBG Iceland on the huge achievement!

SBG Reno's Ray Price takes gold at the police/fire games!
Congrats to Ray, he took gold in the purple belt division of the police and fire games held earlier this Month in LA CA.

He won three matches via submission, all in under 3 mins each.

Well done Ray!

Congrats to John Kavanagh on taking gold in Canada!
As some of you may know, our very own John Kavanagh was touring Canada's SBGlocations this last July.

On July 2nd he was out until 2am, got up at 5am, drove 3hrs and decided to jump into the state championships.

And no surprise, he beat four guys in a row for the gold.

All wearing a sweet G'n'R shirt.

It doesn't get more SBG then that!

Congrats to Rosi Sexton on another HUGE win!
Rosi fought Valerie Coolbaugh in the Bellator season finale. She was originally scheduled to fight Jessica Aguilar, but unfortunately that was called off due to injury just as she was due to fly out. Bellator committed themselves to finding a replacement opponent, and on landing in Florida in the early hours of Tuesday morning, they were told that Coolbaugh had agreed to take the fight. She was coming off a win against Felice Herrig.

Once again Rosi dominated her opponent and went on to show why she is one of the top female fighters on the planet!

Also congrats to SBG_UK, as all fights are Team efforts. And to the genius MMA Coach Karl Tanswell, who is certainly one of the top trainers and corner men in the sport today!

Portland MMA updates
Congrats due to our newest MMA team member Shane Smith!

With just under two years at SBGi, Shane started his MMA career with his first fight at the Roseland theater in June. Shane worked very hard to prepare and wound up winning by RNC in just over 1 minute of the first round. It doesn’t get any better then that! Look for Shane to be very active on the local fight scene in the coming years.

Following Shane’s win in June, SBG fighter Tom Matijacik took a fight at the EWC in Vancouver WA on June 27th. Tom finished the fight with strikes on the ground, winning by TKO in just under two minutes of the first round. Way to go Tom! Look for Tom to  make his pro debut sometime within the next couple months.

New promotions in Portland
At the end of June some well deserved promotions took place at the Portland Gym.

Big congrats to Brooks, Drew, Anthony and Justin Evans on earning their blue belts.

Also, huge congrats due to SBG’s own Chris Stearns on earning his purple belt. Chris went through a 30 personhour long, ironman session in the finest tradition of the Portland Gym.
