That isn't the point. There are technical guidelines and rules. However, given the fragility and expense of guitars, and the very borderline dimensions of their acceptability, it has always been a grey area with airline personnel. This is why I said it's a risk trying to bring it on-board, and to maximize your chances by keeping it as low profile as possible. It's pretty simple.

thirdleg - "Who was this directed at?"

In the context of this thread, it was directed at Moke.

Linear inches just means adding up the measurements of all three dimensions. It's not an intellectual term, lol.

BUT THE LINES ON A GUITAR ARE MOSTLY CURVED YOU GEOMETRICAL ELITIST!

I've carried guitars on quite a few flights, but this has always been when the flights were really sparsely occupied. On packed flights, forget it.

The best bet is to pack your guitar as if you will check it, even if you intend to try to carry it on. That way, you're ok even if they won't let you take it on board.

The way I've always packed my guitars for flights is this. First - hard case. Second, loosen the strings slighty (since it's an acoustic). On an electric with a floating trem, I put a rolled up cloth or bubble wrap under the knife edge to decrease the string tension. Third, put a single strip of bubble wrap between the strings and the fretboard and rubber band it to both ends. This, along with the slackening of the strings, decreases the likelihood that an unwatched airline employee who thinks he's Leo Kottke will grab your guitar and kick up an impromptu concert.

Fourth, put a small roll of bubble wrap (or folded sock, etc...) under the neck/headstock joint to less the stress on the neck if the case gets bounced around. Correction... WHEN the case gets bounced around. Fifth, don't leave any loose items like allen wrenches, string winders and so forth in your case. They'll just bounce around and scratch your guitar. Last, and this is optional, lay a sheet of bubble wrap across the top of the guitar. No need to tie it or tape it.

If you're not flying internationally, a wire cable around the case looped through the handle and affixed with a TSA lock can help. If flying internationally, it's likely they'll just cut the lock off at the destination, depending upon where you're flying.

This has always worked for me. The worst I've got was a busted lock on a case, but never any damage to the guitar despite flying with them to Mexico, Japan, the Philippines, and so on. Hope this helps.

So turns out Mexicana airlines are the bomb, couldn´´t have been easier! , she even asked for a song, i was hesitant at first but the thought of someone like Ahren_NHB in the line behind me, well i couldn´t resist.

LAN Airlines were a bit harder, granted the plane was jam packed, they tried the line ¨¨just leave the guitar with us and we´´ll try fit it on¨¨, but i didn´t buy it. It wasn´t until 10 minutes after final boarding call they relented and let me on with it, as expected fitted perfectly in the overhead above my seat.

TACA airlines, no problemo, straight on again, even let a guy on with what looked like a sitar haha

Yes.  Unless it causes me discomfort or additional effort.

Saw throught the neck where it meets the body. Then install a hinge between them.
Then you'll have a folding guitar that will fit overhead.
