It's official so you fanboys can stop speculating:

The legendary jiu-jitsu master also said he won’t be having a farewell MMA fight at all, something that has been speculated on for the last few years.  “There will not be a farewell fight. I’m very retired,” he said, adding that no amount of money could change his mind.

“It’s not for money at all. That’s my decision and it was planned. I already had my competition time and now my perspective and competitive desires are focused in another field. It’s important to find the time to stop. It’s no to keep forcing it. What happened is over. Now it’s time to move on”.

According to Gracie, what really matters for him is “doing positive work for jiu-jitsu, to make people realise the value of martial arts, to make it a benefit to the communities”.

“You don’t have got to fight to have the confidence of a champion. You can wake up every day, look at the mirror and say you’re able. So you’ll face the adversities of the day. I want to pass the theory part on that you can learn from fighting but don’t need to fight to get the confidence. I’m trying to plan a project, a way to pass this concept on,” he explained.

The Messiah - we'll never know how he was in MMA.

The Best at BJJ clearly though from all accounts and stories.

He won two mma tournaments and beat Funaki down. He was pretty awesome in mma.

Rickson has at least one loss — from the 1993 U.S. Sambo Championships in Norman, Oklahoma, where he was defeated by American Ron Tripp by Total Victory via uchi-mata in 45 seconds. Rickson disputed this loss, claiming he was misinformed of the rules of the event.

Rickson is 4 years older than Couture.Big deal.

And who cares WHERE Severn is fighting?

I respect the fact that he still competes.

Unlike Rickson.Who was just "too good"to even bother w/top competition even when he was in his 30s.

he was fighting long before UFC 1, real fights, not USA spar matches with judges mainstream rules like rounds and time limits

you're a product of watching fights with rules, rounds, judges. It wasnt a sport in his prime, it was an actual fight and not many of your USA hero's have fought outside the sactioned sport world

After 45, each year makes a huge difference in how you feel - especially your will.

This, based on personal experience.

I do like how he officially retires 9 years after his last fight. It's like Kenny Powers officially retiring from baseball four years after the fact.

The HELL it wasnt. You know how many competitive fighters there are today over 40?Several.

He was like 39,40 when public outcry for him to fight Sakuraba began.

For the "top grappler ever"who supposedly had computer-like precision and technique, and water-like "flow"and scoffed at people who relied on strength or speed or genetics, because "Gracie jujitsu is all you need"you would think he would he even BETTER by age 40 and would welcome such a challenge.

But the great Rickson just didnt find it worth his time to face Sakuraba.

Wahtever.I guess if stories about him "fighting on the beach",and beating Yoji Anjoh to death behind closed doors, and beating everyone and their mother in practice is good enough for all you than so be it.

Its not good enough foe ME.I am an MMA fan.

I dont read Aesops fables.
