UFC/Spike TV to Counterprogram Strikeforce/CBS with 2-hour Special

Headlining bouts from UFC 101 through UFC 103 will air Nov. 7 on Spike TV at 9 p.m., the same time and date that Strikeforce will be making its debut on CBS.

Spike TV announced Wednesday that it will air the UFC 102 main event between Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the UFC 103 main event between Vitor Belfort and Rich Franklin, and UFC 101’s featured bouts between Forrest Griffin and Anderson Silva and between B.J. Penn and Kenny Florian. The bouts, which have not appeared on cable, will be part of a two-hour telecast titled “UFC Main Events.”

Meanwhile, on CBS, No. 1-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will meet an undefeated Brett Rogers. Also on the Strikeforce/M-1 Global co-promoted card is a middleweight title fight between Jake Shields and Jason "Mayhem" Miller.

Hmmm.....

Big Challenge against the greatest fighter of all time or UFC re-runs....

Should be a no-brainer. Plus all the hardcore fans see all the main events anyway.

Damn, well done.

As for "UFC reruns"? Yeah, the main events for the last three PPV's with about 7-8 MMA hall-of-famers. Yeah, just re-runs.

Trying to slay CBS with SpikeTV is like trying to slay a dragon with a toothpick.

This is why we need Strikeforce to succeed...it makes the UFC have to work harder for the fans. And in turn Strikeforce has to work harder for the fans.

The fans win. The fighters win. The sport wins. The competition is great.

Finally a possible end to the " ma bell" mma monopoly of UFC. Nothing but good things come of this. Especially if CBS wins the first round

CRE -
UfcSpyGUY -  I would bet that spike will pull a higher rating..

How much cash? I will take a cash bet on that, we will go by the official Nielsen ratings right?

Squared Circle - Trying to slay CBS with SpikeTV is like trying to slay a dragon with a toothpick.

CBS could air a Suddenly Susan rerun and get a higher nielsen rating than Spike. This can't be a serious bet.

Why would anyone watch taped UFC programing over the best fighter in the world fighting a top ten heavyweight for free?

Because most american MMA fans (those that don't post on message boards) have little idea of who Fedor is

Didn't Kimbo on SpikeTV get higher ratings than Kimbo on CBS?  Or am I mixing up the numbers?

Its really hard to say what this will do. Im afraid if Fedor bombs on network television people will say Dana's ploy had a major effect, when really I dont think it will do much. I expect Strikeforce to pull average ratings compared to the eliteXC era shows and UFC re-run to pull strong numbers for a spike show.

CBS had more, but the margin was surprisingly small, especially since TUF was non-primetime on a weeknight.
