The past weekend's Spike TV broadcast of "UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera" scored an average audience of 2.9 million viewers and peaked with 3.7 million for the headliner between Randy Couture and Brandon Vera, the cable station today announced.

Although the broadcast topped the Nov. 7 "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers" event "in every key male demo," according to Spike TV, the CBS-Strikeforce broadcast topped the UFC's audience overall with an average of 4.04 million viewers and a peak of 5.46 million.

However, according to Spike TV, UFC 105 topped the Fedor Emelianenko-headlined card among men 18-34, 18-24, 25-34 and 18-49 by demo-specific margins of 16 percent to 73 percent.

Not too surprising as CBS as a whole has a lot older demographic then Spike.

Strikeforce and UFC are courting two different audiences. UFC has its loyalist young male base, which is great. And Strikeforce via CBS is creating a new audience with minimal overlap on the UFC's base. As much as everyone tries to argue UFC vs Strikeforce the fact is that both shows are helping each other.

Pretty disappointing figures for 105. They are always expected to be strong in the young male demos, but the overall average is pretty mediocre, and the peak viewership for the Couture vs. Vera fight has to be seen as a letdown. To put it in perspective, Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock III attracted two million more viewers... and that was over three years ago.

Would you agree it's safe to say that SF would have done significantly smaller numbers if it went up against the biggest boxing show of the year that pulled ~2 million buys?

=)

It wasn't 2 million for Pac-Man vs Cotto. It was around 1.4 million, not to mention that those scenarios are impossible to compare, given brand strength, exposure to the fan base, etc.

How does 105 compare to other UFC events on Spike? Comparing Spike to CBS is apples to oranges.

While there were 5.847 million viewers watching during the minute when the Emelianenko vs. Rogers fight ended, the next two minutes, which were filled with instant replay after instant replay of Emelianenko knocking out Rogers, actually drew 6.120 million viewers and 6.151 million viewers, respectively. (Those two minutes have not been counted in the average viewership for the Emelianenko vs. Rogers fight because they came after the fight was over.) After that, the rest of the broadcast stayed true to the usual pattern for live MMA broadcasts, which is that viewers tend to leave in droves after the main event is finished.

Last numbered show on Spike was UFC 95, which averaged 2 million viewers and peaked at 3 million for Sanchez vs. Stevenson

Spike is a cable channel, CBS is free. Hellooooooo.

I think a UFC show on free TV would have shocking numbers, don't you?

Also, I don't think too many people (casual fans) were pumped for Couture/Vera, Bisping/Kang, or Hardy/Swick. It probably wouldn't have done much better without the boxing.
