Is there anyone who knows any good moves or escapes from the defensive side mount position. It gets really annoying when someone gets to my side-especially when all you really know how to do is shrimp away and try to get your knee between you and the guy.

1- If you manipulate his body weight so that he's lying fully across you (or he did it himself)...then capture his armpit/shoulder area with both your arms working together (sort of like an underhook with extra help) - against his shoulder closest to your head - if he's lying on your lower body somewhat...

1A- and against his far shoulder if he's lying further up on (and across) your body...

and in both cases you then bridge toward where his head is - but at a 45 degree arc over your shoulder....

2- or if he's giving you space enough to get you arm closest to his lower body underneath him...then wrap that arm around (and from underneath) his lower body with your palm facing upward - while your other hand closest to his head gets underneath him also - so that both arms are now under him (be careful of strikes as you set this up)...and then bridge straight up and backward (no 45 degree angle) - while simultaneously slinking/shrimping out from underneath (as if you're trying to escape from underneath him by passing him over your head while moving your body the exact other way...

3- if his body weight is not fully across your body then do what you say you've been doing - as a bridge toward his head area won't work...

4- and then there's an amazing escape on Sakuraba's instructional wherein he bridges straight up with his body only (no head/neck movement) when he (Sakuraba) has his forearm closest to the guy's head up against the guy's neck/chin area and the other foreman under the guy's lower body - and he gives a serious push upward with both arms at the explosive moment - which is when his(Sakuraba's) feet hit the floor - meaning that he throws his legs up in the air for momentum and begins the body bridge as his feet are hitting the floor. (That's the moment)

It actually can create enough space to finish the guy with an armbar (too hard to explain here - but you've got to see it!).

5- If he's got his head too far up to get the underhook variation I mentioned - but there is no space for your arm near his lower body to get underneath him in any way - then lock your hands together (to avoid armlocks) and use both your arms to push him up and away while you shrimp away from where his head and body are...

Escaping side control can be boiled down to some very simple principles.

You must get off your back and turn into them on your side with your outside leg pulled in tight under you to get maximum leverage.

You must stop inside shoulder pressure either by controling their bicep or by planting the palm of your hand to your own foreheade so that he can't flatten you out

and you must keep the outside arm tucked flat to your chest preventing him from getting and underhook.

If he can;t get a far side underhook, inside shoulder pressure or flatten you out.. there is no reason why you should still be on your side! ;-) so get the hell out of there!

and you can either get back to full guard or get to your knees (your outside arm gets the underhook)

btw: the exact same principles are also the key for bottom half guard.

Keep your arm against your chest, down to your elbow, and your forearm out at 90 degree angle from it, whether he's on the radius side or the ulna side, that gives you the space you need to escape, and it's the number one thing I've found for effective side mount defense. Incidentally, it's also what Michael Jen starts off with in his pin escapes video series.
