Wisconsin fighter 'begged' for title shot at Friday's IFC event

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Eau Claire's Justin Newcomb didn't hesitate when he learned a replacement was needed to face IFC heavyweight champion Travis Wiuff this Friday at the Oneida Casino.

"When I learned they needed an opponent to fight Travis, I literally begged to get the opportunity," Newcomb said. "I couldn't care less about who is favored to win ... I'm just excited to fight and Travis is an awesome opponent to test my skills and see where I stand in the sport."

Wiuff boasts a 57-12 record, has won 13 of his last 14 bouts, and has competed in major mixed martial arts events like UFC, Pride and Sengoku. Newcomb, on the other hand, is 2-0 in his young career. He would have more fights, but says the last four opponents have "backed out" on him.

"You have to respect a guy who is willing to step up on short notice," Wiuff said. "He's a local guy, so I'm sure he'll have the crowd behind him ... I'm too experienced to take him lightly."

At 6-foot-1 and 245 pounds, Wiuff will be the smaller of the two as Newcomb is 6-7 and 265 pounds.

"I'm not looking past anybody that size," joked Wiuff.
The IFC event, featuring 13 bouts, begins at 8 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $30, $40 and $70 and are available at Ticketstaronline.com.

Also featured is a lightweight bout between James Warfield (17-4) of Kenosha, Wis., and Dom O'Grady (7-2) of Detroit, Mich. Warfield is the No. 1-rated lightweight in Wisconsin and has won 15 of his last 17 fights. O'Grady is an accurate puncher with a judo background.

A champion will be crowned in a 4-man welterweight tournament. In first-round bouts, Justin Edwards (2-0) of Belfontaine, Ohio, faces Nick Alvarez (2-2) of Black River, Wis., and Dan Stittgen (2-0) of Chicago battled Trevor Garrett (7-9) of Dayton, Ohio. The winners will then fight for the title.
