Ideally, I think if you're really going to be prepared for survival situations, you should have 2-3 bugout packs.

I envision these as being either an average size backpack or maybe even a bigger hiking/camping backpack. The reason why you would have 2-3 would be to have one in your car(s) and then one in your house.

What are the items you would have in this bugout pack?

Knife (Fixed blade, full tang)
Fire Starter
Bladder/water container
Cooking Vessel
Fishing Line
Hooks/Lures
Sleeping Bag
Tent/bivy sack/hammock
Water Purification Tablets
First Aid Kit
Sewing Kit
MRE's (2-3, broken down)
550 Cord
Lensatic Compass
Super Glue (wound sealing)
Also a rifle, hand gun and ammo would be good to have though the rifle might not fit in the bag so have it ready to move, possibly some loaded mags for both.

And I would probably try and hook most stuff onto a molly vest and then load then rest in a 3 day pack. This might be a bit heavy, but you should be able to rough a month in the wilderness if necessary with this set up.

A question about guns though. Now assuming you were going to carry one of these around in your car 24/7 and couldn't carry a gun, would you still some carry ammo??

And while I understand something like this is less than ideal for hunting and self defense, what do you think of something like this for the pack:

A .22 rifle is fine for hunting. But, this is a decent .223 that folds up and you can store extra clips in the stock.

In my primary BOB (large ALICE) I carry 100 rounds of .22 and a dozen 12 gauge shells. I don't keep my guns with my BOB, but in the event that I need it, I'd rather have the ammo handy just in case.

I have the Sub-2000 in Glock 9mm. I got that one instead because it's about a foot smaller when folded which makes is FAR easier to travel with. Add that it not only uses the same ammo as my CCW but also the same mags, and it's a nifty little gun.
