Mac Danzig faces Justin Buchholz in the Feb. 6 pay-per-view Ultimate Fighting Championship event, UFC 109: “Relentless.”  A noteworthy side story to the event: Mac Danzig is a vegan.

“Ever since I can remember, I’ve always had a profound respect and interest in nature and animals,” Danzig explained in an interview with PETA. “I guess it’s just in my blood. I grew up poor by American standards and was raised to eat whatever we could afford. I remember being 13 and seeing a truck on the interstate filled with pigs all headed to the slaughterhouse. One of them made eye contact with me for a while. It was one of the saddest moments I can remember. There was so much intelligence and spirit in him, and here he was, being sent to an awful death.”

When Danzig was 20, he was working at an animal sanctuary in Pennsylvania and began experimenting with a vegan diet but was advised to eat meat again when he started training full time for fighting. “I believed what certain people said and started eating chicken again because I thought that I had to have some kind of animal protein in order to be a successful athlete. It was crazy because my diet was still pretty much vegan, except for chicken about three times a week. It never sat right with me.”

The 30 year-old Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Fighter switched to a plant-based diet in 2004 after reading about vegan athlete Mike Mahler and has never looked back.

Im glad he at least stated his belief is because of the unethical treatment of animals... which is what the original vegen concept is about... rather then saying its healthier, or for health benifit which is what most idiots today think

Zamiel - Jake Shields is also a vegetarian. I wonder about his diet.

probably a lot of oats, some hay, and maybe a carrot as a special treat when he's been good

LilBrockonmychest -  lol at the pig making eye contact with him for awhile

yeah, that was great, and all the intelligence and spirit he could see in the pig's eyes. ROFL

cry me a river. I'm going to eat extra pork today just to make up for what he's not eating. in fact, I'm going to cook double what i'll eat and throw the rest away.

I used to work with a guy that was all into healthy eating. He wasn't a complete vegetarian, but was always eating all kinds of funky looking stuff from the health food store.

Anyway, this diet made him extremely gassy, and he farted a lot. It was the most absolutely disgusting thing I've ever smelled in my life. The nasty bastard did it in an enclosed area one time while me and another guy were around. I have an iron stomach, but the other dude not so much. It was so bad that he vomited in the trash can.

That could be Mac's secret weapon in a fight. If his opponent takes his back, let one rip! I wonder if the doctor would have to stop it if someone threw up during a match?!

I believe Nick Diaz is as well. Don't know about nate, but I imagine if his brother is, he is.

Its a known fact that Nick is only a vegetarian when he is NOT high. Which is never. So you fail.
