Federal jobs are very difficult to land, with some agencies being more difficult than others.  Everyone wants a federal job now, and the competition, which was never easy, has gotten much stiffer.  Although the jobs may appear to be open to anyone, they are often filled with cronies and other connected people.

Unless you have a experience in a highly specific and technical area (e.g. fiscal law) or have veteran's preference, it is difficult to get a federal job. As an outsider, you are competing against current federal employees, ex-military JAGs, and graduates with stellar credentials.

salyer36 - I am figuring with all of the new funding and regulations there will be a ton of hiring going on that could benefit a young attorney like myself.

Friend works for the DOJ. There is a hiring freeze in place in the Fed.
