Zola "shocked" as Hammers axe finally falls

Gianfrance Zola is said to have been left "shocked" after being sacked by West Ham despite guiding the club to Premier League survival.

Zola's contract was terminated following a meeting with Hammers managing director Karren Brady on Tuesday morning, and the club will now be looking to make a quick appointment, according to co-owner David Sullivan.

Sullivan exclusively told Soccernet: "We hope to have in place within three weeks an experienced manager. We will study people's past records to find a manager with a proven track record."

Mark Hughes, Avram Grant and Slaven Bilic are the favourites to replace him in the Upton Park hotseat, while highly-rated Real Mallorca manager Gregorio Manzano is also in contention after guiding the unfancied club to the brink of Champions League qualification, and Martin Jol is also being considered.

Really? He didn't see this coming? West Ham aren't world beaters, but the fact that they had to scrape by to survive with the amount of talent they have in the side is laughable.

ben green, diamanti, matthew upson, carlton cole, among others. they should at least be up there with the mid table teams -- Fulham, Blackburn, Birmingham City -- not down amongst the Hull City, Burnely, Wigan end of the table.

Just a horrible year on and off the pitch. But I think most can see a new manager is needed, to go with the new ownership. The team has talent (the wage bill reflects that) and I agree,  they shouldn't have been at the bottom like they were for most of the season.

Having said that, the goal for West Ham in the next few seasons is to pay down debt and not get relegated. Nothing more than that. Glory days ahead.....
