entered a $24 buy in Rush Poker tourney last night on FT. 135 entrants. When we were down to 14, I was in 5th place and playing pretty well. I've got about 30,000 in chips and I'm in the SB. The BB is ahead of me with about 42,000. I'm holding KQ offsuit. The blinds are $120/$240 at this point. Everyone folds around to me and I'm faced with a tough decision, I think.

I think my hand is too good to fold, but making a raise opens me up to the possibility that the BB shoves and I'm committed or have to fold, depending on the size of the raise. I could fold, but I think KQ is too strong against a random hand to simply fold. I could shove because my stack is big enough to cripple the BB so he's only calling with a premium hand.

Before I say what I chose, what are your thoughts? I think the answer you'll give is to make medium sized raise and fold if he shoves, but I'm not sure. Remember, since it's Rush Poker I dont really have a read on the BB.

Can you confirm that you had 30,000 chips and the blinds are 120/240? Because it's huge if thats correct, since you have over 100bb.

If so, then just raise to $720 and fold to a re-raise.

I'm assuming the blinds were probably 1200/2400 leaving you with ~13bb. Then just open shove.

Xader,

I was already in the money (just barely)...they paid to 15.

PR, I think I'm pretty close with the blinds, although I forgot to mention the ante kicked in.

I'll just come out and say thinking was faulty. I had raised from the small blind with decent hands a few times and almost every time the BB shoved. Since it was my first time playing Rush Poker I thought that it was a factor of the game (everyone raises from SB because of the autofold feature being used so much in Rush), and that any raise would be giving money away. I figured that the only call I would get was from a premium hand and that the with the fold equity and the strength of my hand against many premium hands, the right thing to do was shove...or fold.

I shoved and the BB called with A-9. The flop wasnt that bad considering the A because it came A-J-rag, but the ace held up.

I think I should have just raised the same way I would in a regular tournament and folded if he reraised. I was convinced that the dynamics were different since it was rush, but I can see how that was faulty thinking.

I'm willing to bet that you had only something like 10-15bb. You should have just open-shoved.

Rush poker moves quickly so I'm not completely sure I had 10-15bb. I think I had more, but you might be right. In fact, since I did open-shove, I hope you are right! :)

Yeah, I think it was. Because you were in or around the money, and it was a $24 tournament. Usually at that point the average stack is under 20bb. The only time you have a super deep stack is in the Poker Stars Deep stack tourneys or in very high buy-in events.

PR, I'm playing it right now and I think you're right. There are ~80 people left and blinds are 80/160 and no ante.

Im sure you know this andre, but its really really important for analysis to get ALL the details exactly accurate. Typically, for a tournament hand you need:

1) buyin
2) blinds
3) antes amount
4) # of players dealt into the hand
5) players started, players left, how many players make the money?
6) if in the $, how much are you guaranteed, whats the next jump to?
7) your read on ALL the players involved in the hand, not just the villain
8) average stack size at the table
9) the stack size of you and your opponents in the hand

because in a lot of tournament cases, you can break it down mathematically.

PR, you're right (as always). I need to be much better about keeping track of those things.

Last night I realized that I stopped growing as a player. I have been in autopilot for a while now and it's really hurting my game. I have to go back to the attitude I had when I was starting, which was to focus on making daily improvements and to study my mistakes. A big part of that is accurate details when it comes to posthand analysis.

Thanks again, PR.

Are you doing any of the WSOP events this year?

Yeah, the blind level didn't make much sense.  We generally go higher than that in 9 man SNGs.  You definitely wouldn't consider pushing with 100+ bbs.

Level Small Blind Big Blind
1 15 30
2 20 40
3 25 50
4 30 60
5 40 80
6 50 100
7 60 120
8 80 160
9 100 200
10 120 240
11 150 300
12 200 400
13 250 500
14 300 600
15 400 800
16 500 1000
17 600 1200
18 800 1600
19 1000 2000
20 1200 2400
