FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I just made my OG gardens thread only to lose the OP. I might talk myself into doing it again since it is raining, but that is just frustrating.

In Ontario with the new feed in tariff (guaranteed rates for energy you sell to the grid for the next 20 years) it makes more sense to set up solar panels on your roof then sell the energy back to the grid. You then buy cheap energy from the utility. A 2mw rooftop system pays for itself in about 4-5 years, then you make about $4,000 a year.

If the utilities decide to screw everyone by raising rates, you just disconnect and buy a battery system and power yourself.

jscorbett - One of my students works on a family farm that raises primarily charlois breeding cattle. He cut a deal with his dad to take the reject heifers and bulls. He markets them privately as grass fed beef and yuppies will drive out of Atlanta (about 4 hours north) to buy his beef at inflated prices.

He markets them as grass fed beef simply so he doesn't had to furnish them with any other feed than just grass or hay. His customers think he is doing this for environmental and health reasons. hahaha

Do you mind sending me a PM letting me know who this guy is so that I don't buy from him?

okay guys, lets try to revive this thread. maybe kvr can give us some helpful hints on developing a good long term plan to help us prepare for off the grid living. everyone else, please tell us what your plans are (if any) for the next 15 years to help lead you to the promised land that is sustainable living.

i'll start. first, purchase an rv and live on the family land already established in south carolina. there is already water (well) and electricity, but i plan on purchasing a solar panel grid tie system to offset the costs. also, start a garden that will provide for myself, my lady, and child. raise some livestock (rabbits, chickens, and goats) for meat. find enough work to pay bills and maybe eat out once a week. i eventually want to build a cabin, i'm just not too familiar with south carolina and want to keep my options open for where i want to permanently settle. pretty generic, but just a rough draft. feel free to chime in.

Jesse Ventura was on Stephen Colbert, he has a place in Mexico, off the grid. No electricity, plumbing, etc. It seemed pretty special.

sounds like a good plan, is your wife/girlfriend onboard?

she's a relative novice when it comes to knowledge, but the more she learns, the more she wants to learn. i don't think she would object.

kvr will win the OG rookie of the year award and he's only been here 2 months. My wife has mentioned becoming more self sustaining eventually. This thread has really struck something in me and now I want to do this eventually. You will be well prepared for the impending Zombiepocolypse.
